Jamaal Charles says he's ready to go

09 May 2012 - 08:04 AM

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles said Tuesday that he's ahead of schedule in his recovery from a knee injury that ended his 2011 season after just two games and promised to punish opposing defenses in 2012.

"When I touch that field again, you're going to feel my pain," Charles told the Kansas City Star. "You're going to go through what I went through. It's going to be that way for me the rest of my career."

He was coming off a breakout season in which he gained 1,467 yards, second only to the Texans' Arian Foster, and averaged nearly 6½ yards per carry. Charles also caught 45 passes for 468 yards while earning his first trip to the Pro Bowl.

He told the newspaper that Chiefs fans shouldn't worry about him not being a factor this season. The Chiefs open the 2012 season at home on Sept. 9 against the Atlanta Falcons.

"If you're worrying about me not being the same, just look out for me this year," Charles told the Star. "I'm hungry. I want it this year. I've got the passion for it. I just can't wait to play football. I can't wait to bring stuff back to this community and show them how much we can win. I feel like this is a year for us that we can go all the way. I'm saying that because I feel it in me that I can bring a lot to the team this year, being bigger, stronger and maybe even faster."

The Chiefs' first full-squad practice is May 21 and Charles must be cleared by Dr. James Andrews, his surgeon, before he can participate. But the Chiefs' star running back said he feels he's already ready to go.

"I feel I'm at the point where I can do that," Charles told the newspaper. "I feel I can do the same thing my teammates do. I do it without the coaches around. I catch the ball, I cut, I do a lot of drills and I've been doing this for two months."

Charles said he feels "normal" now and is focusing on building his upper-body strength. He had surgery on the knee in October.

"I feel like I can do everything everybody else can do and I can do it even better," he told the newspaper.

He will be joined in the backfield by Peyton Hillis this season and Charles said the former Cleveland Browns running back will be a big addition to the team.

Draft suspense making a comeback

Suspense is making a comeback at the NFL Draft. Executives at both ESPN and the NFL Network know how much you dislike when they foreshadow or tip picks before the official announcement, so both networks pledged during interviews with SI.comlast week that broadcast cameras will no longer show first-round draftees on the phone with their teams before being selected.

"The league, the NFL Network and ESPN have recognized that it has probably tilted too far in taking some of the suspense out of the draft," said ESPN senior NFL producer Seth Markman, who is overseeing his first draft for the network. "Part of the problem in this world of instant news and social media is that you can't hold the news. But I think we do need to find a way to find a way to bring back some of the suspense of the commissioner making the announcement.

"We realized that we have been doing the viewer a disservice in that we have lost some of the excitement of when the commissioner walks up to the podium and announces the pick for the first time," said Eric Weinberger, the executive producer of the NFL Network. "We're not going to tip when the kids are on the phone with their team. The first time the public hears officially that a young man is chosen is going to be from Commissioner Goodell's mouth."

Bucs bag Jackson

As expected, the Buccaneers have agreed to terms with receiver Vincent Jackson, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.
It’s a five-year deal worth a grand total of $55,555,555. (I just realized that’s ocho cincos.)
He gets $26 million fully guaranteed, via a $2 million roster bonus in 2012 and a fully-guaranteed $11 million base salary in 2012. For 2013, he gets a $13 million base salary, fully guaranteed.
The last three years aren’t fully guaranteed, with a $10 million base salary in 2014, a base salary of $9,777,777 in 2015, and a base salary of $9,777,778 in 2016.
And so Jackson will get an average of $13 million over the next two years. The Chargers could have kept him in 2012 for $13.7 million.
That said, it’s a lot of money for a 29-year-old receiver. And if he doesn’t have a pair of big seasons, the $10 million due in 2014 may never be paid.

Yay! that means we don't have to deal with him twice a year anymore!

And the first cut of the year is.....

Demorrio Williams Released By The Chiefs

I can't prove this but I was just writing a blog post about potential salary cap casualties for the Kansas City Chiefs and I looked at Demorrio Williams' 2012 cap number, which was $2.3 million, and figured he'd be a candidate to be released.
And before my story is ready, the Chiefs announce they've released Demorrio Williams. This marks the first release of the offseason. Free agency starts on March 13.
Adam Caplan reports the Chiefs will save $1.7 million in cap space with the move.
He was playing primarily a special teams role (and a good one at that) but that role is replaceable. A lot of draft picks and undrafted free agents are competing for that special teams spot every year.
Williams is 31 years old. He originally came to KC on a five year deal in the 2008 free agency period. He started ahead of Derrick Johnson in 2009 before DJ took his spot and he was a backup the next two seasons.
