Steve Spagnuolo fired by Rams

Black Monday is off and running.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that the Rams have fired coach Steve Spagnuolo. ESPN reported last night that Spags and G.M. Billy Devaney would be let go on Monday, and now it’s happened.

Glazer doesn’t mention whether Devaney will keep his job.

Spagnuolo seems like he could be a good coach in the right situation, but St. Louis was clearly not that situation. His defense was a major disappointment and the team wasn’t competitive most weeks.

SI’s Peter King pointed out he lost more regular season games in three years than Bill Belichick has in more than a decade in New England.

The hanging question: Will any other coaches be fired Monday?

It sounds like Chargers owner Dean Spanos wants to take some time to make his final decision. The Bucs ownership has not moved quickly on changes in the past. The Colts or a possible surprise team is out there.

For now, four head coaching jobs are vacant: Jacksonville, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Miami.  Of those four situations, the Rams have the most promising quarterback and the best draft pick.

Any team that has a coach and GM position available has one up on us. A lot of the top coaches want that dual position and we are hampered by the fact that there are only so many coaches that will fit what Pioli wants, and that is someone that will work with pioli. Our coach pool is limited to Crennel, McDaniel, Ferentz, Etc. because of that.

And because the Rams have both positions opened it will be more attractive to the Fishers, Cowhers, etc.

Coaches rarely get that kind of power anymore because the most who have gotten it struggled with the duel role.

Fisher, as I understand it, has no interest in being a GM/Head coach. He wants to coach. Now I'm not interested in Fisher, but I'm just saying.

Cowher, on the other hand, does appear to want all of that control. He's probably the only guy I can think of that comes with those strings attached though.

No doubt the Rams are a hot looking job. A high draft pick for a first year coach, and a #1 overall QB going into his third season. All of this turnover, however, does not bode well for the development of Bradford. There seems to be correlation between the success of highly drafted QB's and the stability of the team they're drafted by.

It would be a scheme change and I don't really see that happening..

I'm not a huge fan of spags as a DC. I don't think he's bad, I just think he's really over-rated. I could successfully coordinate a defense with Osi, Strahan, and Justin Tuck.

Generally if you have 3 elite pass rushers life gets pretty easy.

There's a saying I like to use, and It's: "You can never have too many pass rushers".

I think teams should draft at least one pass rusher or project pass rusher every season regardless of their depth chart.

I think the giants actually do that.
