Is there anything more pleasing in sports than to watch a team totally implode that had spent the entire previous off season buying up the market, signing every top name free agent there is? There have been multiple examples in the past, the 1980's California Angels, the Snyder owned Washington Redskins.

Ah, the 3-6 Dream Team, the Phildelphia Eagles. It is somehow satisfying knowing that just because you spend more than anyone else doesn't make your team the best.

Even the team that is most successful at doing it, the New York Yankees, still get a lot of grief when they don't make the playoffs because they spend WAY more than any other MLB team. The Miami Heat had a lot of people cheering against them because fans generally don't like to see a 'bought' team win it all.

Probably not just a uniquely American trait, but it is very American to want to see the store bought, bourgeois, monetarily entitled teams, fail.

My name is Maximus Decimus Warthog, member of HomeoftheChiefs.com, former season ticket holder of the lower level , loyal servant to the true coach, Martimus Schottenheimer. Father to disenfranchised sons, husband to a non football fanatic wife, and I will see my Chiefs in a Super Bowl, in this life or the next.

Agreed, it is fun to watch them just implode.

Unless, you know, you are an Eagles fan.

I think it is more satisfying to watch the Yankees crash and burn though because in baseball it is alot easier to buy championships.

Homer: [reading] "Project Arcturus couldn't have succeeded without you. This will get you a little closer to that dream of yours. It's not the Dallas Cowboys, but it's a start. Drop me a line if you're on the East Coast, Hank Scorpio." Aw, the Denver Broncos!
Marge: I think owning the Denver Broncos is pretty good.
Homer: Yeah, yeah.
Marge: Well, explain to me why it isn't.
Homer: [sighs] You just don't understand football, Marge.

All the eagles did was sign Babin, Aso, and a bunch of back-ups. I never understood why that got so much attention.

It's not like Vince Young (who coined the phrase from his spot on the bench) or Ronnie "always hurt" brown were going to make them leaps and bounds better.

And Aso is a man to man corner... that is ALL HE EVER DID in Oakland. There should have been questions as to how he'd play in another scheme.

If you're going to sign him, wouldn't you play more man coverage just to take advantage of his skills? That's what kills me. Work with the strengths of the guys you've got.

Oh I totally agree! I mean you can man to man with him and cloud the rest of the defense. He may be one dimensional, but by god is he good at that dimension!

Isn't Asante Samuels considered more of a zone corner and not that great at man to man?

Oh, I loved that it was the Mavs that got to beat the Heat in the Finals.

Jonas hit the nail on the head: they could have Nmandi in man while keep with the rest of the secondary in a cloud coverage. Also, Nmandi is much better than Samuels, so if you want to hitch your wagon to a star, Samuels is not the star to go with.

Samuels is actually just a different kind of CB. If CB's had a stat called "INT %", he'd lead the NFL every season. He sucks in run defense and is a gambler who will get beat, but he's probably the biggest 'playmaker' CB in the league. He doesn't tally up those INT totals because QB's throw at him a ton. They really don't.

Aso is the exact opposite. A shut down man corner who won't tally many turnovers.

The race for all bluster and no substance is getting close. Kermit was right, it's not easy being green.
