Report: Joe Paterno's exit in the works

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State administrators on Tuesday canceled Joe Paterno's weekly news conference in which he was expected to field questions about a sex-abuse scandal involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.
Soon after, The New York Times reported that Penn State's board of trustees has had discussions about how to manage the 84-year-old Paterno's departure. The newspaper, citing "two people briefed on conversations among the university's top officials," said that Paterno's exit could come within days or weeks.

"Due to the ongoing legal circumstances centered around the recent allegations and charges, we have determined that today's press conference cannot be held and will not be rescheduled," assistant athletic director Jeff Nelson said in a statement.
Paterno's son, Scott, told The Associated Press that the decision was made by president Graham Spanier's office.
Scott said that his father was disappointed and was prepared to take questions about the scandal as well as Penn State's upcoming Big Ten game against Nebraska.
The news conference was to be the first chance for reporters to ask Paterno about what he knew about Sandusky, his one-time heir apparent, who was indicted on charges of sexually abusing eight boys over 15 years.
Authorities have said that Paterno, who testified in the grand jury proceedings that led to the charges, is not a target of the investigation. But the state police commissioner has chastised him and other school officials for not doing enough to try to stop the suspected abuse.
A person familiar with Sandusky's relationship with Penn State told The Associated Press that the former coach long maintained an office in the East Area Locker building which is across the street from the Penn State football team's building, and was on campus as recently as a week ago working out.
The university's online directory listed Sandusky, whom Penn State officials said was banned from campus over the weekend -- as an assistant professor emeritus of physical education in the Lasch building.
The grand jury investigating Sandusky found that he was given the office, a parking pass and other amenities as part of his 1999 retirement package.

This entire thing is f**ked up

While unfortunate for Paterno, I really feel he should have reported what he knew to the authorities. Not just his athletic director.

I agree, just a shame that a legacy like his ends like this.

They all brought it on themselves though.

Great career for Paterno, one of the greatest in history, has all been thrown down the drain because he decided to protect one of the lowest scum on Earth. What Sandusky did should result in one of the only reasons to be able to shoot someone on site. It sickens me that anyone would protect scum like that and that anyone would support anyone that would knowingly let something like that go. It was a great career for nothing Joe.

He shouldn't be allowed to finish the season. I want to know how any of these people slept at night knowing they were protecting an alleged child molester. I want to know why everyone cares so much about Paterno's legacy and I haven't heard much about these poor kids.

This is why a lot of women are turned off by sports. It's the good ole boy network where the rules don't apply.

What more is there to say about the poor kids? It sucks for them. I hope they get justice and Sandusky rots in a prison cell for the rest of his life.

The question is, how many kids from 2002, when Paterno first learned of it, until now were molested that wouldn't have been if Paterno had done the right thing?

There is nothing meaningful I could add to this discussion that hasn't already been said a million times by now. I feel sorry for those poor kids, especially any of them that didn't have to suffer through it, had Paterno and anyone else with knowledge of the situation turn it in.

I found that video disturbingly sick, what do you think?

I don't follow college sports much, so I didn't really even know who Joe Paterno was before all this. I am repulsed by him and the way this whole thing has gone down. Albus Dumbledore (yes, I'm about to quote Harry Potter on a football message board -- proof that I am a complete nerd) said that we have the choice to do what is right, or what is easy. He chose to do what was easy.

He has brought all this on himself. I don't understand why anyone would protect a child molester. If it had come out after the first incident, I can't see how one man's actions would reflect poorly on Penn State or anyone in the football program. What is the most revolting is that people had a choice to protect children, and they chose not to. Their inaction led to the physical and emotional abuse -- I would even call it torture -- of CHILDREN.

I was listening to 610 yesterday and they were talking about this, and one of the guys said that the grad student who saw this and didn't get the cops involved because he would have been blacklisted from coaching.... maybe I'm weird, but if my life's ambition required me to remain silent while children are being sexually assaulted, I'd find a different career.

Should Joe have went to the police? Yes.

This whole thing is getting pushed way out of proportion, Joe is an icon and has never done anything to hurt anyone. He made a mistake by not telling law enforcement, but this is all getting bigger than the fact of the matter. Joe didn't touch those children, if you want to hate and boycott someone it should be that douche Sandusky.

Yes, but the question is if Paterno went to the police how many kids would have been saved?

Right. As much as people put celebrities and sports figures on a pedestal, they love making an example of them just as much. The only truly intolerable acts committed were by Sandusky.

That being said, Joe should still get fired over this.

So, how bad does everyone think the NCAA will penalize Penn State for this, if the authorities find Sandusky guilty of the charges? It would have to be way worse than the one USC got.

And yes, I think firing Paterno was a good decision. He knew about what was going on and did nothing about it. How could you not do anything about this, if you're a very well-respected and revered head coach, not only at Penn State, but throughout the whole NCAA football program?

I guess I disagree. I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I don't want to live in a world where winning football games is more important than preventing the sexual assault of children. Paterno didn't physically touch those children, but he had a hand in their abuse by his choice not to act. I find it unconscionable.

In his act he did move it up the ladder of command. If the AD didn't do anything with it that is on the AD.

True. He did what he was legally obligated. But he continued to work with the man after knowing what Sandusky did.

Can you continue to work with someone knowing what he did with out reporting it?
