AFL VOTES TO SOLDIER ON
Posted by Mike Florio on December 10, 2008, 10:19 p.m.
Despite a report that the Arena Football League planned to suspend operations for the 2009 season by the end of the week, owners voted on Wednesday via conference call that the show will go on, according to the Associated Press.
"The Board will continue to meet regularly to examine any and all long-term structural improvement options for the AFL," the AFL said in a statement.
We previously reported that the AFL Players Assocation agreed to reduce the salary cap by 25 percent. It's possible that further concessions have been made.
Meanwhile, preparations for the coming season will proceed, apparently in order to avoid "pulling a Shiancoe."
"We're readying contracts right now for when we're ready to move forward with free agency," Luke Stahmer, Colorado Crush vice president of operations. "We're buying helmets and jerseys as if it's a regular season. We don't want to get caught with our pants down, so to speak."

My name is Maximus Decimus Warthog, member of HomeoftheChiefs.com, former season ticket holder of the lower level , loyal servant to the true coach, Martimus Schottenheimer. Father to disenfranchised sons, husband to a non football fanatic wife, and I will see my Chiefs in a Super Bowl, in this life or the next.

I guess this is cool that they will keep going. It was kinda fun to watch when KC was good a couple of years ago

I went to a game in Orlando a last year and it was mildly entertaining but it was kinda hokey.
I'd rather have the new USFL thing they've been rumouring.....

I thought it would be fun, but I can't stand the total disregard for defense (guess that's why I'm a big Gunther fan) and lack of strategy. It's just balls to the wall offense.

Yeah I heard something about that a while back.. are they still talking about that as an option of alternate football still?

People tend to forget how close the original USFL came to greatness. They were even stealing players away from the NFL, alot like the AFL did back in the 60s.
Interesting rules. I really like Safeties being worth more, college overtime rules, and touchbacks being placed at the 15. I'm kinda indifferent on one foot in bounds and the 4 points for 51+ yard field goals. Could you imagine somebody trying to move back to score an extra point at the end of the game? I honestly do not like 3 point PATs though. It places too much emphasis on what is still basically a chip shot. How in the hell do they plan on enforcing "no kneel downs" though?
Still, the rules seem to make special teams more important and creates several unique ways for close ball games to end. I'd watch it.
