Raiders land Jared Gaither

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 29, 2011, 5:14 PM EDT

We’ve been wondering what the heck the Raiders are going to do with their offensive line with so many question marks heading into training camp.

We have at least one answer.

Tackle Jared Gaither is on board in Oakland, according to Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. Gaither was possibly the most talented and physically imposing tackle left in free agency. He was also probably the riskiest.

It’s no surprise that Al Davis took a swing here. We’ll be very curious to see the contract terms but he definitely makes a shaky Raiders offensive line a lot more talented.

This sucks in more than one way. This is the guy I wanted us to sign after Klabo was gone and now he goes to the rivals. How in the Hell are the Raiders, who are supposedly over or at the cap signing people and the Chiefs, way under the cap, are not. I don't get it.

I really think in a little over a half hour, when teams can officially announce deals done with players, we'll hear a couple more FA signings for the Chiefs. Maybe I'm just too hopeful.

still waiting. My fear is that we will have to get the salary floor by buying shit players.

UPDATE: Drew Rosenhaus, Gaither’s representative, said the report was incorrect and terms have not been agreed to. It sounds like the Raiders thought they had a deal. Another report says Gaither checked into the team hotel Friday.

Well, now that we realize we don't have to hit the cap floor, that eases our expectations and fears. :jester:

Maybe this Gaither saga isn't over?

Looks like the Gaither deal fell through.

You mean I can't believe everything that is published?

http://espn.go.com/b...-in-for-raiders

Quote

ESPN’s John Clayton is reporting the Oakland Raiders have decided not to sign Baltimore tackle Jared Gaither. The team visited with him Friday and it was reported by multiple outlets that he agreed to terms.

I’d say the very likely reason why Gaither was not signed was his injured back. He missed all of last season with a back injury. Friday night, Oakland coach Hue Jackson, who coached Gaither in Baltimore, said they wanted to make sure he was healthy.

Instead, the Raiders agreed to a one-year deal to bring back Khalif Barnes. Clayton said Barnes is currently slated to start at right tackle. If third-round pick Joe Barksdale comes on strong, perhaps he’ll join Jared Veldheer as a starter.

Barnes started three games for Oakland last season.

When healthy, Gaither is a better player than Barnes. So, this turn of events is a dose of bad news for the Raiders, who are trying to fix their problems on the offensive line. Perhaps when healthy, the Raiders will revisit signing Gaither, but for now, it appears they are going in another direction.

Terms of the Barnes deal weren’t available, but the one-year contract, the source said, was worth more than the minimum salary because they brought back Barnes to start at right tackle. They haven’t re-signed tackle Mario Henderson.
