OK, I have to admit, I really laughed at that one.

Pioli set the right house on fire, just trying to get his QB some good press.

It was Palko, with a Molatov cocktail. He was looking at Cassel's house, but he read blitz and tried to check down.

For what it's worth:

Quote

Both Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel and General Manager Scott Pioli told the Kansas City Star that there will be a quarterback competition this offseason.

“There will be increased competition at every position, including the quarterback position,” Pioli said. “Who that is, I don’t know. Maybe it’s Kyle [Orton], maybe it’s another free agent, maybe it’s a draft choice, I don’t know. Very few people can perform at an extremely high level without competition.” Orton, who started the last three games of the season after Crennel took over for fired coach Todd Haley, is an unrestricted free agent, but both Pioli and Crennel seem to want him back to compete with Cassel.
“Kyle did a good job in those three games, and you can’t take that away,” Crennel said. “I wouldn’t be sitting here if he didn’t do the job he did.”

A Cassel-Orton competition sounds like something Crennel would like to preside over in training camp. “What happens in free agency remains to be seen,” Crennel said. “I know competition makes everybody better, and we’ll just have to see what kind of competition we’re going to have at the quarterback position.”

http://profootballta...ck-competition/

I have a hard time believing that Orton would want to re-sign here to compete with Cassel, rather than go someplace else. Even if the Colts draft Luck, Miami signs Flynn, and the Browns take RGIII, he could still head to Seattle or Washington and be the clear starter. If he did stay it's a clear, but not adequate, upgrade over Cassel. As I said before, I'm not going to be happy unless we draft a QB with the intent to start him sooner rather than later.

The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to finalize which man will be the team's offensive coordinator in 2012 -- QB coach Jim Zorn and former Oakland Raiders OC Al Saunders are under consideration -- but one thing has been revealed: there will be competition for the job of starting quarterback, according to Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star. Matt Cassel and Ricky Stanzi are the only two Chiefs passers that remain under contract heading into 2012, and the team is poised to add one or more alternatives in free agency and/or the draft."What happens in free agency remains to be seen," head coach Romeo Crennel noted. "I know competition makes everybody better, and we'll just have to see what kind of competition we're going to have at the quarterback position."

One possibility is Kyle Orton, who was the starter as Crennel led the team to a 2-1 record over the final three games as interim coach; this included a win over the previously undefeated Green Bay Packers. Another option -- especially if Saunders gets the nod -- is Jason Campbell.
The Chiefs are unlikely to grab a QB in Round 1, but using a second-round pick or later is possible. Players potentially available under that strategy include Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden, Nick Foles and Brock Osweiler.

It's fine if you think that, but then you better not be in favor of a guy like Matt Flynn. (Don't remember if you were or not, just making a point)

The difference is Flynn has played in the NFL for a couple of seasons

And I am not in favor of getting him. I am on the sell the farm for RG3 bandwagon.

And I could counter that Weeden has at least been starting games lately. People would be kidding themselves if they thought either of them were proven.

I'm all about RGIII too, but I'm not getting hopes up too much.

I'm pretty much set on drafting our own guy. I'd love RGIII, I think he'd bring some energy and excitement to the stadium. However, I really would be happy if we drafted anybody with the intent to play him this year or next (even if it's not at the #12 spot). I just want Pioli and company to acknowledge that Cassel is not the solution, and developing a young QB is the only way we're going to dig out of this hole. Even if Manning was completely healthy, and even if he wanted to sign here, he's nothing but a temporary solution. If you draft a franchise QB, you're set for 10+ years.

It's true, but at least the problems that plauged those two players should not plauge RGIII. Russell was a loafter, and Leaf was a child. Their heads were not in it.

Griffin, because of his background, should at least give you everything he has.

Right. I said I wasn't getting my hopes up too high.

You keep digging. You look at the next set of guys. Tannehill, Osweiller, Weeden... see if we like any of them. Look at guys already in the league too. A sure thing never pops up on the open market when it comes to QBs. At best you'll have a guy with an injury history or something.

We have a scouting department and a GM to find the best prospects each year. I know nothing is a sure thing, but I'd like to think that 1) if they're good at what they do, and 2) if they made quarterback THE priority, they could find and deliver the best prospect that we can get our hands on. We traded for Cassel and then just quit looking, assuming everything was taken care of.
