We didn't lose more than we gained in Free Agency last year, so no surprise. Can you name any valuable players that walked away in Free Agency? I can't.

They actually have a formula they go through to determine who gets what picks and where. 32 picks are always awarded, and I'm pretty sure we were no where near receiving any. The way things are going this offseason with all of our signings, I doubt we'll get any next year either.

Chiefs Barely Miss Out On Extra Draft Pick

by Joel Thorman on Mar 22, 2010 4:19 PM

Among other things, one of the items on the agenda at at the NFL owners' meetings is the awarding of compensatory picks.

Here's a good definition of what that is. Basically, if a team loses a free agent, they're eligible for an extra draft pick from the NFL the following year. However, it's not just any free agent. Things like the amount of the contract and playing time are taken into account and usually less than 30 are awarded.

Now the Chiefs didn't lose any free agents that would've made this list last season but the NFL awards 32 regardless. So, if there are only 30 compensatory picks -- as is the case this season -- then the NFL awards non-compensatory picks to teams in draft order in the seventh round until they hit 32.

The Lions were the last non-compensatory pick awarded, which means the Chiefs missed out on Mr. Irrelevant by a measly two picks.

And if you don't think that's note-worthy, then look at Ryan Succop, who was the Chiefs Mr. Irrelevant and seventh round non-compensatory pick.

Damnit! So close!

I never knew they awarded picks to other teams after all of the teams that deserve Comp picks. I guess you learn something new every day.
