Tide’s McClain says he has Crohn’s Disease
By KEN ROGERS
Published: March 10, 2010

TUSCALOOSA — With all they’ve accomplished and as much as they have been dissected the past three, four or five seasons, Alabama’s departing players unveiled a few surprises at the Crimson Tide’s Pro Day.
All-American linebacker Rolando McClain revealed he has Crohn’s Disease. McClain’s disclosure came as he explained his apparent exhaustion after Cincinnati Bengals coach Jeff Fitzgerald worked out the certain first-round draft pick and teammates Eryk Anders and Cory Reamer.
And All-American nose tackle Terrence Cody checked in under 350 pounds. Cody was criticized after weighing in at the Senior Bowl in January at 370 pounds. Many scouts and NFL watchers questioned his commitment.
Cody showed up at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis at 354 pounds. Wednesday, we weighed 348.
Check back later for a complete story from Alabama’s Pro Day workouts.

Crohn's can cause a B12 deficiency, but if he gets shots and takes care of himself otherwise, it's really no big deal. David Garrard has it too.

Chron's can also be a very big deal, even if you do take care of yourself.

The reason it'd cause a B12 deficiency is because it can cause a 'pretty much everything' deficiency. Malabsorbtion is but one of the main symptoms. Immune problems are another. Inflammation as well. I don't know if you're imagining B12 shots, but most of the people I know that have it (I knew 4, 2 of which I'm related to, 1 unrelated died in her early 30s about a month ago as a result) are more likely to get Remicade or Humara shots, both of which are radiation treatment (chemotherapy).

To say it's no big deal is grossly inaccurate. He might be fine most of the time since he'll likely be on a strict diet anyway, but happens whenever he gets a fistula or an abcess in mid-season? That's not the sort of thing you play through.

Diagnosed at age 16, thank you very much. Four surgeries thus far. You can play football with Crohn's disease.

I knew you had some kind of intestinal health issue, I didn't realize it was specifically Chron's.

I'm sure he can play football, I'm just saying there probably are complications. It really depends upon how bad he has it. You know how it is. You have some good weeks and some bad weeks.

Yes, but once the docs have found a medicinal regimen that works, 90+% of the time the afflicted is in full control, and fully able to stop symptoms for a few hours or even a day when needed. My case is most likely more severe than his, and I can guarantee you that if I had an inkling of talent and/or discipline, I could play football.
