Everybody rightfully has warm fuzzies for Lilja. Local kid, started on a Super Bowl team, should have been on our team already. What more could you ask for?

My only question is he's sort of undersized and has traditionally played LG in a pass happy offense. I wonder if he's physical enough to play RG in what most of us would presume would be a run-oriented offense (Charles + Jones = ZOMG!!!1one)

I hope we sign Lilja, and I'd have to imagine he's an upgrade on what we got. I just wonder if he's really a slam dunk type player, that's all.

My Aunt Virginia would be an upgrade to what we have at right guard.

Niswanger? Seriously? Certainly we can find someone off the local JV team to play center...even that is an improvement.

Move Waters to center. I've always heard that he can do it, let's see.

Now we would be getting somewhere. Or would you move Lilja back to his left guard position and move Waters?

Lilja at C, Brown at RG.

We're just dreaming.

He's under 40 and has no connections to the Cards or Patriots. We know it won't happen.

No.

Lilja is more of a smallish guard who is made out to look better on the run blocker because he blocked for Peyton Manning.

The fact is that the Colts were ranked 32nd rush offense in the NFL, and he was the first to be cut, should pretty much sum everybody's thoughts on this issue.

Unfortunately, it looks like it hasn't.

This guy is definitely one of the right 53
by Adam Teicher

If they haven't already, the Chiefs need to place a call to the agent for former Indianapolis guard Ryan Lilja, arrange a visit for the former Shawnee Mission Northwest and Kansas State player and then get his autograph on a contract.

Lilja, who was released by the Colts, is what the Chiefs are looking for. They're looking for guys who know what it takes to get to the Super Bowl and Lilja, having played in two such games for Indianapolis, is one of them.

This is right for the Chiefs on a lot of other levels, too. He's a local guy, he fits in well on their offensive line, he's a tireless worker and his return would allow the Chiefs to right the wrong they committed a few years back when they cut him and tried to sneak him on to their practice squad. The Colts instead stole him away.

I'm always suspicious when a team just dumps a player for non-financial reasons and the Chiefs need to do their homework on the reasons Lilja is suddenly looking for a job. But word around the league is that the Colts are merely looking to get bigger in the middle of their offensive line and Lilja just doesn't fit any more.

He fits in Kansas City, so the Chiefs should move quickly and make this happen.

The Chiefs already had Ryan Lilja once already. why would the Chiefs want him back. He did not show signs that he was worthy of playing a football game in Kansas City so the chiefs releaed him. And then the colts picked him up.

So why would the chiefs want him back for when he is not that good."

At the time, we only had the best O line in the league. It was not the crappy line we have now. There would have been numerous lineman that wouldn't have made the team then. Think it out."

reminds me of an old poem by Charles Osgood that I was read in grade school:

Quote

WHY "PRETTY GOOD" ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH

There once was a pretty good student,
Who sat in a pretty good class,
And was taught by a pretty good teacher,
Who always let pretty good pass.

He wasn't terrific at reading,
He wasn't a whiz-bang at math,
But for him education was leading,
Straight down a pretty good path.

He didn't find school too exciting,

But he wanted to do pretty well,
And he did have some trouble with writing,
And nobody had taught him to spell.

When doing arithmetic problems,
Pretty good was regarded as fine,
Five plus five needn't always add up to be 10,
A pretty good answer was nine.

The pretty good class that he sat in,
Was part of a pretty good school,
And the student was not an exception,
On the contrary, he was the rule.

The pretty good school that he went to,
Was there in a pretty good town,
And nobody there seemed to notice,
He could not tell a verb from a noun.

The pretty good student in fact was,
Part of a pretty good mob,

And the first time he knew what he lacked was,
Whe he looked for a pretty good job.

It was then, when he sought a position,
He discovered that life could be tough,
And he soon had a sneaky suspicion,
Pretty good might not be good enough.

The pretty good town in our story,
Was part of a pretty good state,
Which had pretty good aspirations,
And prayed for a pretty good fate.

There once was a pretty good nation,
Pretty proud of the greatness it had,
Which learned much too late,
If you wanto be great,
Pretty good is, in fact, pretty bad.

It's time to draft our guards and centers of the future, and we need to get guys who will be standouts at the position. We want a great team, not one that's pretty good.

So pretty good isn't good enough in personnel?

You'll only be satisfied when KC has 53 great players?

Good luck with that.

By all accounts (including my own) Lilja was the Colts best run blocker, and it wasn't even close.
One man on the OL, however, can't do it alone.

He still has good mobility, even after his knee injury, and woud be a good fit in the Chiefs blocking scheme.

However, I think there are better options to choose from in the draft, and rumors are that the Chiefs did show some interest, but aren't willing to match his asking price.

I would hope we could get around 22 great players at least. I don't think anyone was looking at Lilja for depth.

Obviously our definitions of 'great' and 'good enough' are very different. :jester: Because by my definition 22 great players would be impossible.

You can not get 22 great players..........ever.

What you need to be a championship calibre team, and a cosistent contender, are a franchise QB, a couple of playmakers on each side of the ball.

For the rest you need role players, guys that do their job.

I think you guys are taking me a bit too literally though. My point was that we don't have to have good role players for all 53 spots, but the starters better all at least cut the mustard.

Bottom line, I don't think Lilja is the appropriate solution at this time. I think we can find a better guard in the draft and I don't want the team to stop short when acquiring talent.

I'm pretty sure we have our future RG under contract now, that being Brown. Now, if we can get Lilja at a decent price to be Waters backup or start at RG until we figure out what we're really going to do with Brown, I'm in. What we don't need is another "true guard" palying center. That hole has to be filled with either one of our 2's or at least our 3rd rounder.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong. And I'm sure some of you will tell me I am. But I'm not. Peace out, y'all!!

Chiefs checking out Lilja
Posted by Mike Florio on March 15, 2010 3:58 PM ET

The Kansas City Chiefs, still struggling to turn around a franchise that has of late been in shambles, are in the process of checking out whether another team's trash might turn into treasure.

Per multiple reports, the Chiefs are hosting former Colts guard Ryan Lilja today.

Lilja, a five-year veteran, started every game in 2009 after missing all of 2008 due to injury, after starting every game in 2007. He also started several games in 2006, including Super Bowl XLI.

You're right, he's a big kid. I just saw Colin Brown's brother Saturday night at a McDonald's in Cameron. Braymer's basketball team was on their way home from a game, I think.

Not too surprisingly, he was wearing a Mizzou shirt too. :D
