My name is Maximus Decimus Warthog, member of HomeoftheChiefs.com, former season ticket holder of the lower level , loyal servant to the true coach, Martimus Schottenheimer. Father to disenfranchised sons, husband to a non football fanatic wife, and I will see my Chiefs in a Super Bowl, in this life or the next.

Arena League keeping door open to return to Kansas City

The Arena Football League will be back in 2010, but Kansas City won’t be a part of it.

Not yet, at least.

During a teleconference on Wednesday, Arena Football One commissioner Jerry Kurz announced the new league, which will feature 15 teams and start play in April, has purchased all the assets of the cash-strapped former AFL and is already looking into expanding during the 2011 season.

“We’re in serious negotiation with a number of markets, including Philadelphia, Southern California, Denver and Pittsburgh,” Kurz said.

Kurz said the league, which is accepting applications from ownership groups hoping to join the league in time for the 2011 season, hopes to expand to Kansas City.

“Kansas City is a tremendous sports town and we would like to bring a team back there,” Kurz said. “You have two great facilities and great fans there — we’re just looking for a strong ownership group.”

Arena Football One, which will soon change its name to the Arena Football League, purchased its predecessor’s team names, records, history, trademarks and logos in December for $6.1 million.

That means the only way the Brigade can return to Kansas City, Kurz confirmed, is if it’s a part of the new league. Kurz said Brigade owner Chris Likens, who couldn’t be reached for comment, has not submitted an application to join the new league.

The former Arena Football League suspended operations in December 2008 in hopes of finding a new economic model. Likens, who purchased the Brigade in 2006, said last year that he lost millions on the team.

However, Kurz said the new league is put together as a single-entity structure, giving it the financial stability the old league didn’t have.

“We are a single-entity league, taken from what Major League Soccer did years ago,” Kurz said. “All the coaches and players are property of the league, and every team owns the league.”

The new AFL, which is comprised of several former AFL and af2 teams, also announced last week that it has entered into a new telecast partnership with the NFL Network.

The AFL will premiere its 2010 regular season with a live, primetime game telecast on April 2.
