Royals land national Sunday night game on ESPN

The Royals’ 97-loss season has apparently garnered the attention of ESPN, which considers the 2010 version of the Royals worthy of a stand-alone game in prime time against the Angels on July 4 at Anaheim.

If Zack Greinke isn’t pitching, maybe the nation will finally notice Billy Butler.

Anyway, it’s the Royals’ first appearance on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” since June 16, 1996 — when Trey Hillman was managing in the Florida State League, general manager Dayton Moore was an area scouting supervisor and Butler had just finished the fourth grade.

The Royals played a few network games last year, but those were part of regional broadcasts. ESPN’s “Sunday Night” games are the only nationally televised baseball during that time, so if fans want to watch ball, they’ll have no choice but to watch the Royals — warts and all.

Along with the game times for this season, the Royals also announced Tuesday they will not raise single-game ticket prices in 2010.

The team increased the average ticket price nearly $2 to $24.84 in 2009 when the newly renovated Kauffman Stadium made its debut. Single-game ticket sale dates will be announced later.
