Little League Football

Had a great experience last night with my 8 year old's little league football team that I am assistant coach on. He plays for a 3rd grade team thats 1-0 and they were playing against Harrisonville in their high school stadium, which is a beautiful facility with artificial turf and all. I was afraid that the boys, that are used to playing on grass fields, would be a little overwhelmed. Not only that, we have 17 kids on the team while Harrisonville had 34. They marched their team out and sat them down before the game all disciplined while our kids were on the other end of the field acting like a bunch a jackasses. Right away, intimidated just a little, I feared for the worst.
We came out and on the very first drive, on the third play, my kid, at QB, breaks off a 60 yard TD run around the right end. OK, we all relax a little and feel a little better. Second quarter he gets a 15 yard TD run and we go up 12-0, missing all our extra points. We go in at half up 12-0 and some of our kids are getting too excited thinking it's over. Well, it's never over. The other team comes back with TDs in the 3rd and 4th quarters to tie it 12-12. (I should add here that I made a bonehead decision as a coach, pulling off too many kids, leaving 10 on the field that led to one of those TDs by the other team). We make a big goal line stand to go to overtime.
In this league, OT rules let each team try to score from the 10 yard line and if it's tied after that, it ends a tie. They win the toss and take the ball. We make three good plays to stop Harrisonville on the 3 yard line, so it's 4th down and 3. Here's where I make up for the earlier bonehead mistake. I notice a formation that they are in that they always used in the game to run right. I yelled out and got my fastest and best tackling safety (he's been a project of mine) to move over the that side of the field. He moves over and stops the runner for a one yard loss on a great one on one tackle.
We get the ball on the 10, and get to the 1, so it's 3rd and 1. We run the fullback up the middle and before he could get the ball, my son (at quarterback) got a bad snap and went to his knee as he handed the ball off. My heart sunk because it was open and we would have had a TD and a win on that play. So because his knee went down, we get it at the 3 for 4th and 3. Next play counter play, run to the left, the other team thought it was going up through the middle, and the running back had a clear shot to run it in. TD and win 18-12.
Anyway, the kids acted like they just won the Super Bowl. Needless to say we were pretty high in the sky for the hour drive back from Harrisonville. Didn't mean to bore anyone, but love to relate this stuff. Notice I never relate it when it's bad, but it's been mostly good lately.

I used to be the head coach for flag football. Now I'm the assistant for my stepson's tackle football team. We're 0-2 this season but we played a really good game on Saturday.
Our offensive line was really firing off the ball and we moved the ball great. But the other team had a really fast QB and we couldn't contain the corners and he ran and ran and ran on us.

Our son plays on the 3rd/4th grade team and it's his second year of playing. He has 21 kids on the team and plays nose tackle. It's kind of funny to watch as he's one of the smallest on the team at 60 pounds but he's really quick and beats the center and guard off the snap quite frequently. Other coaches always yelling "Is anybody going to block #51?" Grandpa is a Bears fan and talked him into the Butkus number.
My husband coaches the defense and put him up front and all the 120# plus kids kind of snickered for a little while until they found out how fast he was. He's been wrestling since kindergarden and has picked up tackle football really well. Our team is 2-0 this year with a 18-14 win and a 12-0 win. 4 more games to go.

That's cool Splatter. Too bad our kids teams couldn't play each other. We're 3rd graders and 2-0 as well, beating Harrisonville 18-12 and Holden 20-0, so the scores are even similar.

The other coach thanked us for the sportsmanship of not running the score up. Good win. 3-0 now.

This is very ironic. Our two teams are very similar. My sons 3rd grade team played Grain Valley Saturday and won 18-0, which also was our halftime score. My son was the quarterback and on a 3rd and one play from the 30 he did a QB sneak and actually went as they were blitzing and made a 30 yard TD run. He also had a couple of good tackles.

My son in the 6th grade played today and they played a team that hasn't lost in three years. Our team lost 27-0. The team we played has scored 110 points this year and has given up 0. We were just hoping to score against them.

I had the camcorder and was filming. They were trying my kid in a new fullback/slot position. He's never scored a touchdown before in the 2 years he's played tackle even though he's been close.
On the first drive they got to the 15 on 4th and 7 and threw a screen to my boy. He followed his blocks and ran it into the end zone. I got it on tape. Flag. Those SOB refs threw a flag. They called back the TD, but we did get the first down on that play and we eventually scored.
He got a big sack and a tough 7 yard catch over the middle where he got nailed, but nothing as good as a TD. It was getting close to halftime so I told everyone I had to go so I could go see my other sons game and as I was leaving i was still filming.
With 40 seconds left in the half, they hand off to him and he gets hit, the ball flies up in the air. He reaches up grabs the ball, spins and heads to the outside where he runs down the sideline for a TD. He finally gets a TD, I get it taped, we go up by 13-0 and I have to leave. Turns out that was the final score and we win 13-0. Just thought it was very cool how he finally got that TD before I had to go. As I left, i filmed the other coach yelling at the top of his lungs at his kids for not stopping mine.
