Pats Trying To Move Into Top Ten

Amid a dearth of pre-draft rumors (for now), Peter King of SI.com reports that the Patriots are trying to move into the top ten.
Per King, executives from two different teams said that the Pats have offered their first-round pick and one of their three second-rounders (No. 47 overall) to move into the No. 8 spot, currently held by Jacksonville. Jags G.M. Gene Smith declined the offer.
King says that the Pats might also be trying to trade up to No. 9 with the Packers.
Under the original draft trade chart, the Pats’ first-round pick (No. 23 overall) is worth 760 points. The 47th pick is worth 430. The total (I need more toes) is 1,190.
But under the original draft trade chart, the No. 8 spot has a value of 1,400 points. The ninth spot is worth 1,350.
Teams don’t trade up simply for the privilege of having a higher pick; they do it because there’s a certain player they want.
Presently, the Pats’ target isn’t known.
Given that the Patriots apparently hope to cut the line in front of the 49ers at No. 10, the target could be a tackle, like Andre Smith. Or perhaps an outside linebacker, like Brian Cushing.
One thing is clear: the Patriots will do everything they can to keep any possible deal quiet until the pick they want is on the clock. That way, the Pats won’t have to worry about being leapfrogged.

Hey, maybe we can make a trade with the Patriots and get our number 2 back that we sent them for Cassel.

See, thats what I don't get, why someone shoots up from the very back of the pack to the top just in that span between the combine and now. I was told it's because of personal interviews and workouts teams do, but I don't buy it. It's wierd.

There’s a rumor making the rounds that the Patriots’ reported effort to get into the bottom of the top ten was a ruse, and that the team has no desire to move up.
In fact, we’re hearing that the Patriots are actually considering the possibility of dropping out of round one altogether. At No. 23, the Pats are in position to dangle the pick to a team that might like to get in position to get a given receiver before a six-pack of teams that need pass-catchers hits the clock: the Fins at No. 25, the Ravens at No. 26, the Colts at No. 27, the Eagles at No. 28, the Giants at No. 29, and the Titans at No. 30.
[Editor’s note: Yeah, I know the Eagles traded the 28th pick. I was looking at an outdated first-round roster when I wrote this. And because I’ve got a list of like 50 stories I want to post ASAFP, I might make a mistake or two. So thanks for pointing out the error, to all 234 of you who did. Now direct that energy toward signing up for the Predict the Pick challenge.]
This would explain the Pats reportedly offering a package to the Jaguars that falls dramatically short of the requirements of the draft trade chart.
And despite talk that the chart should change, the need for change applies at the very top, where the contracts have gone as the kids say in the comments “batsh-t crazy.” By pick number eight, the craziness subsides, making the current chart still very relevant.
And now that folks like Chris Mortensen are suggesting that the Pats would trade up possibly to pick off receiver Michael Crabtree, we’re wondering whether coach Bill Belichick might be trying to spark a little fire under the fanny of Randy Moss, whose incredible talents from time to time need a lawnmower-style cord pulling in order to fully engage.

As for the Jackson comment..Seymore is heading downhill IMO , he isn't the player he was and they do need to get some youth up there IMO. I am just not sure they have the cap to sign a top ten, or even 15, guy..

I figure this means Rodney is done and Taylor is coming and I love getting a couple of '10 2nd round picks. Overall pretty good imo.

Ryan doesn't seem as stupid as Mangini though.
I also hate that the f-ing Colts took my boy Don Brown from UConn.
