Quote:Reading the latest tea leaves, that puts Pioli in the Chiefs' wheelhouse. League sources tell me Pioli seems excited about the opportunity in Kansas City, which he's believed to be interviewing for Monday. Pioli still has to do his due diligence and thoroughly research the Cheifs' roster, but he's said to be high on some of the building blocks that Kansas City has in place (like offensive left tackle Branden Albert, and cornerbacks Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr).

The Chiefs are also in an enviable salary-cap situation, with at least $30 million of room to maneuver, and I don't think it hurts one bit that Pioli's wife was born and still has family in the Wichita, Kan., area. From a lifestyle perspective, Kansas City might be a better fit for Pioli than even Cleveland.

I think the meeting today is the SECOND meeting. I still think we have a chance at getting this guy.

I think Clark has Pioli as the top guy on his list

UPDATE from Warpaint SUNDAY NIGHT

From all accounts and as per Fox Sports Jay Glazer, Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli will meet on Monday. Per our source, they tell me that the two have spoke already briefly either on Friday or Saturday but they would not confirm if it was face to face or on the telephone. We're leaning toward face to face but it was a rather brief introductory meeting either way from what we were told.

Per Don Banks report at CNNSI, we've confirmed that he's leaning away from the Cleveland Browns oppportunity and liking the sitiuation better in Kansas City. The sticking point is power and he would like to at least offer the job to Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz (see our profile of him on this board) as the teams next Head Coach.

But if Pioli can handle the power deferment that Hunt likely will make him earn with Super Bowl Trophies, the Chiefs will move to the front of the class.

However, I still maintain that he stays in New England and gets a big raise. But there have been radio reports in Cleveland that his father-in-law Bill Parcells has told him that KC is an attractive job and that he should strongly consider taking it.

As far as the other candidates, below is the list - in no particular order - we think are all candidates for the Chiefs GM job. Please note Hunt can speak with any of them including the ones in the playoffs, but untiil their respective teams are eliminted from the post season, they can't be offered any other NFL jobs. We believe some on this list have already met with Hunt for an initial interview - maybe as many as two of them.

1. George Kokinis - Baltimore
* Will interview with Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner as soon as Monday.

2. Erik DeCosta - Baltimore
* My personal favorite and to me the best young candidate available.

3. Kevin Colbert - Pittsburgh
*Can't knock his drafts whatsoever and has a big fan in Bill Cowher.

4. Doug Whaley - Pittsburgh
*Had personal issue to overcome but is highly respected nonetheless.

5. Ron Hughes - Pittsburgh
*Great evaluator of talent and strong GM material.

6. Chris Polian - Indianapolis
*Likely staying at Indy.

7. Jimmy Raye III - San Diego
*Might be the fastest riser on the board right now.

8. Mark Dominick - Tampa Bay

*KU guy so he gets my secondary vote. But if he does not get GM job could be added to Player Personnel department. He wants out of Tampa to get a fresh start and would love to return to the Midwest.

Summary:
We hear that Chris Polian might be interviewed as a courtesy but many believe he's going to take over for his father Bill in short order - especially if Head Coach Tony Dungy retires next week as some assume will happen. Just can't see him leaving.

Secondly, none of this looks well for Herm Edwards whatsoever. There is also am internet report (not Warpaint Illustrated) that Defensive Coordinator Gunther Cunningham and his staff have been let go but we've not found anything to confirm that one way or the other. As far as we know, he's still the DC for now.

And the circus continues.
The defensive staff does need to be let go.
