2022 Offseason Thread - asskickingboots - 02-04-2022

The Chiefs didn't end their season the way wanted to, but that doesn't mean their window is closing. Let's look at their cap situation.

https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/02/03/kansas-city-chiefs-updated-salary-cap-2022-nfl-offseason/

With a little massaging the Chiefs can enter free agency with anywhere from their current $14.2M to $59M after just 3 moves (cut Hitchens, cut Clark, restructure Mahomes) or more depending upon which players they want to keep or restructure.

So while there's a lot of other optional work they could do that would save them some cap in 2022, like extending Tyreek, even without that they should have the money to do a lot of what they want with guys like Mathieu and Orlando Brown Jr. BTW, if you're worried about restructuring Mahomes so soon his contract is really designed with this in mind.

In the draft as things stand the Chiefs have 9 total picks:
Round 1 - #30
Round 2 - #62
Round 3 - #94
Round 3 - #102
Round 4 - #133
Round 7 - #230
Round 7 - #240
Round 7 - #248
Round 7 - #259

This is of course before compensatory picks. For example, Ryan Poles' departure would lead to an estimated 3rd round pick.

I'll examine all of this more deeply later.

I'll add that we will be looking for a new qb coach and/or new OC. Kafka is (maybe?) gone and EB has interest in the Saints and the NFL itself is reportedly "pushing" for that to happen.

Also, supposedly, we are getting a new dl coach and I believe our lbs coach went back to the college ranks.

If they are high on Kafka, let EB go and promote Kafka.

I'm supportive of the new DL coach.

Chiefs release LB Anthony Hitchens

https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/02/22/kansas-city-chiefs-release-linebacker-anthony-hitchens/

This move saves $8.4M for the cap and was really allowed by the growth of young LBs Willie Gay and Nick Bolton. I think Hitchens will find a team quickly. He was overpaid, but teams value leadership and the experience with the green dot far more than fans do.

RE: 2022 Offseason Thread - mabbott - 02-23-2022

I am ok with this. Honestly, too much money for the amount of production. When he was signed it was needed. We are past that. I wouldn't be against him coming back in a reserve role for much less money.

I hope the Clark is either gone or his contract restructured as he is overpaid as well and PLEASE don't resign Sorenson!

Report out today that EB will be back as OC.

Yeah, it looks like EB isn't going to get a HC position... 15 interviews and nothing.

I agree. Hitchens wasnt bad, he just wasnt good enough for the money. And even at a lower salary he would be a guy we would be looking to upgrade from if we didnt have gay and bolton already. We still need to find a 3rd lb though. Niemann ain't a replacement but I'm afraid we'll end up resigning him as depth.

Chiefs Hire Matt Nagy as QB Coach / Senior Offensive Assitant

https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/02/25/kansas-city-chiefs-matt-nagy-hired-qbs-coach-senior-offensive-assistant/

Yay?!

In all seriousness I think he's a solid assistant. He had some head scratching moments as a HC, but most first time head coaches do in their first tenure.

I thought it was kind of interesting that Veach said the door was still open to bringing back Hitchens at a lower price. I don't think that's a realistic option.
