As much as I like the signing to give Charles a breather and not wear him out into a short career this is nothing long term. Jones is not apart of the big picture.

While this may be true, it does allow us to focus our attention on other positions of greater need in the draft.

I'm always leery of signing 30+ year old vets at any position other than kicker, but.... hell, I'll get a little excited about this move. He's coming off of five consecutive solid seasons, he's never been asked to carry the ball 400 times (only broke 300 twice), and he doesn't get hurt. He only needs to have a little gas in the tank to do what the Chiefs need him to do (200 carries, tops). If he can teach Charles how to do a proper endzone dance, we'll be set.

Unfortunately that IS Jamaal's endzone dance. :pity: I remember seeing it back at Texas.

To get a guy like him for 2.5 million is a great, great investment.

Props to Pioli/Front office for making a great investment in Thomas Jones, who by all acounts, isn't really totally finished.

He'll make a nice addition for this running game, and hopefully give Charles some well-deserved break in certain situations.

What I like most about this situation is the money. And not because we got him for cheap per se. But because he took less than he probably could have gotten elsewhere. And we are not offering him a starting role either. Add all that up and ask yourself, why would he choose KC, a non-contender? It must mean that Clark, Scott, and Todd are giving one hell of a pitch and painting a really good picture of what's to come at Arrowhead. When we're choosing to get active in free agency, our guys have the muster and the balls to get the guys they want and to make the feeling mutual.

BBQ and Bullys, or course!
Seriously, I see this as a very good move. That's one less hole we have to fill and at a bargain price, no less. I'm in.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong. And I'm sure some of you will tell me I am. But I'm not. Peace out, y'all!!

on kansascitystar.com there was a very interesting article on the jones/charles situation. Here are my favorite quotes from the article.

At 212 pounds, Jones is bigger and more powerful than Charles.

“This is a guy that has shown he’s a complete back,” Haley said. “He can run a lot of different runs successfully. He’s shown that on tape. He had a year when he caught 56 balls.”

Jones was a first-round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2000.

Jones, who got a two-year contract, is at an advanced age for an NFL running back, but Haley said Jones is a young 31 because he was seldom used his first four NFL seasons.

“He saved a little wear and tear in the early part of his career, so it’s not like he’s necessarily a normal nine- or 10-year guy just because of that,” Haley said. “In his first three or four years, he was under 200 carries, so it’s not exactly what it appears.

We did the research. We watch these guys thoroughly. You’ve got to make that determination. We all came to the conclusion that we’d like this guy to be part of what we’re doing.”

Wow, a Chiefs coach using words like RESEARCH, much better than "we look for football player" That is not exactly what Herm said, but something like that.

I love it just because it keeps Fargas the merry blue f**k away from this team.
