It's great having the up to the minute news from Adam on there.
Now as far as everyone else on Twitter, I still make fun of them. I can't believe what some people post on there.
Aaron Rodgers

Last week my nephew's high school football team had a fundraiser Brat Fry outside a local grocery store. The school is a small private school and this is their first year of fielding a varsity team.

When Aaron came out of the store, after doing his weekly grocery shopping, he stopped by the fundraiser and bought a brat. He took time to shake hands and talk with each guy on the team. He said he had seen a story about the team on the local news a few nights earlier and wished them well this season. Then he dropped a hundred dollar bill in their tip jar on his way out.

A couple days later there was a delivery from the Packers of some equipment that had been used at training camp along with a sizable cash donation to kickoff the fund for the building of a stadium at the school. Aaron also has been in contact with the school regarding donating some autographed items for an upcoming auction.

Always nice to see that a great player is also a great guy in person.

After Katrina, football became home for Chiefs’ Kendrick Lewis

Posted on Sat, Sep. 04, 2010
After Katrina, football became home for Chiefs’ Kendrick Lewis
By KENT BABB
The Kansas City Star

The rookie free safety sits in the Chiefs’ locker room, looking at his hands and remembering where they’ve been. He thinks of where they’ve taken him, and where they might go from here.

Kendrick Lewis points to a fleur-de-lis tattoo on his right hand, where his thumb and forefinger meet, and lowers his voice to almost a whisper.

“It represents the struggle,” he says. “Everything my city has been through. How people before me have paved the way. You think about a lot of things.”

Lewis is from New Orleans, and so many of his neighbors have a story that sounds like his. Five years ago last week, Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast, and New Orleans was flooded. Lives were lost, lifelong residents displaced and families separated with nothing but silence and worry to pass the time. When the city was in agony, its residents took refuge where they could.

It was football season when Katrina made landfall, and that seemed trivial then. But it was in the game that Lewis found refuge, in a town 520 miles away. When all seemed new and strange, there was always football, the old steady.

“You think about everything,” he says, “that you had to go through to get to this point.”

• • •

Lewis remembers the evacuation. And the 14-hour, bumper-to-bumper ride to Houston. He went with an uncle, and most of the family stayed in New Orleans. The storm came, and the phone lines were sheared. Cell service was unreliable.

Days passed before Lewis spoke with his family. He knew his relatives were alive only because a news camera showed them boarding a bus. He learned later that his grandmother spent a night on a bridge.

“It was hard,” says Lewis’ mother, Clarissa. “But we made it.”

After the blur of those first days, Lewis assumed football was over. His ticket out of New Orleans’ urban center had turned into a forced exit, and the game that could take him to college and maybe beyond was now an afterthought.

He was a talented wide receiver, and he had a scholarship offer from the University of Mississippi. But Lewis was in danger of missing his senior season, and he knew that such an absence can make things complicated.

“I just wanted to get back into football,” he says now.

Clarissa Lewis had been placed in a government-regulated apartment complex in Gainesville, Ga., and Kendrick made his way there. He told everyone he met in Gainesville that he was a football player; that he needed directions to get back on the road he once traveled.

On the day Lewis enrolled at Gainesville High, the school’s football coach, Bruce Miller, got a call. There was a senior at the main office who wanted to meet him. Wanted to see about joining the team. Said he’d do what it took to play.

“I went down there, and boy, was I pleased,” Miller says. “First impression was: ‘I want to be a part of things, and I’ll play this week, coach, if you’ll let me.’ ”

He was on the sideline that Friday, and Miller decided to test the kid. He put Lewis on the punt-return team, knowing then that the stranger from New Orleans had the best hands on the team.

The first punt hit the ground and bounced, and Gainesville’s players scattered, careful not to touch the ball and chance a turnover. That’s when Lewis raced in, grabbed the ball, and returned it about 20 yards. Miller says he turned to his assistant coaches, and they knew then that something good might come out of all that bad in Louisiana.

Through the transition, Miller says, Lewis never complained. He wasn’t the type to discuss where he’d been or the storm that had chased him out of there. He told his teammates that he was a Gainesville resident now; and there was no other place he wanted to be.

“He changed the whole atmosphere of our football team,” Miller says. “Everybody was like: ‘We’ve got to play better because Kendrick is here. It was never about Kendrick. It was about the team.

“His attitude was so infectious. He moved in here, and in three weeks, he could’ve run for mayor and won.”

Lewis had been there five weeks when he was chosen homecoming king. College recruiters began showing up in Gainesville, but Lewis says he stuck with Mississippi because it stuck with him.

Miller says his team was average before Lewis arrived, and with him, the Red Elephants reached the third round of the state playoffs. Lewis says now that it wasn’t home, but it felt like it.

“They didn’t know who I was; I didn’t know what to expect,” he says. “I thought I was a good player; I was going to help them the best I could.

“It just so happened it worked out.”

• • •

Months after the storm, Lewis returned to New Orleans. About 4 feet of water had flooded his family’s home, he says, and the memories from the first phase of his life were swollen and waterlogged.

He walked through, trying to salvage what he could. The trophies that once underscored his talent were trashed, and his most prized possession, the first MVP trophy he received in Pee Wee Football, had to be abandoned like so much else.

“Me and my mom talk about it, when she goes to decorate: ‘I wish I had this, I wish I had that to put up,’ ” he says. “But the hurricane took all that away, so we had to start over.

“All those things that meant so much for me, I kind of lost those things in the storm. But they’re just memories now. You just move on.”

Lewis moved again, this time to Oxford, Miss. College football and the SEC. Once again, he had new team and new teammates. He was among the few who had done this before. Lewis moved in with another freshman wide receiver, a kid from the Florida Keys named Dexter McCluster. They challenged and encouraged each other. Sometimes Lewis wanted to talk about what happened in New Orleans, and sometimes he didn’t.

“I tried to kind of let him do the healing,” McCluster says now. “Football, that really helped him out.

“When he got on the football field, it’s kind of a peace of mind.”

Lewis moved to defense, and McCluster became a star. Years later, NFL representatives interviewed McCluster and tried to delve into his background. Between the sprints and workouts at the NFL combine, players are grilled to see how they’ll hold up.

Certain answers are telling about a player’s background and how he’ll react to the rigors of the league. What has prepared him for such a change? How does he think he’ll respond to playing in a new city, on a new team, with a team full of new faces?

McCluster says he told the NFL folks that there was another player they should look into. Those things they were asking? This player had done it all before. His name was Kendrick Lewis, and he was strong and determined, talented and ambitious. He was a player who once had all the trophies, but it was how he responded to losing them that earned his teammates’ respect.

“With him,” McCluster says of Lewis, “you’ve got all the kinds of leadership that you need, and you’ve got somebody who’s going to be hungry each and every day.

“I knew what type of player he was. I knew it. We played together. I saw what he can do.”

• • •

There he goes again, the rookie with no business on an NFL field flying around, making a play, his dreadlocks bouncing on his Chiefs practice jersey during another impressive workout.

“Sometimes it looks like it’s luck, sometimes it looks like it’s skill,” coach Todd Haley says. “But when the ball consistently ends up going to a defensive player, that’s a good sign.”

Lewis seems to always be around, and it’s his hustle that helped him flirt with the starting lineup during training camp. That was four months after the Chiefs made McCluster and Lewis a package deal, drafting McCluster in the second round and Lewis in the fifth. Already, Lewis has his coaches’ attention.

“He’s a guy that survived,” Haley says.

McCluster smiles when he’s asked about his former roommate, and says that Lewis’ emergence is a surprise only to those who didn’t know where he’s been.

“I kind of laugh,” McCluster says, “We talked about it, and he said, ‘You know what? Fifth round? I’m going to come out here and I’m going to make a big impact.’ And that’s what he did.”

Haley says Lewis has a chance to become a “complete safety,” and the coach praised his instincts and feel. Lewis says he has no intention of fitting the profile of typical late-round picks, whose futures are often murky. He says he’s lived through enough uncertainty and that this is a time to prove that where he’s been has prepared him for where he’s going.

“I love the game so much. I just feel right when I’m doing this,” he says. “I came in with a mentality that I’m not going to accept nothing but what I deserve. I came in as a fifth-rounder, but I’m going to work my butt off.

“You look back, and I don’t want to go back to that situation. I want to better my situation. That’s the sense of urgency I have with it. I approach it like: It’s now or never.”

Bison Crush the Jayhawks 6-3

North Dakota St. upsets KU 6-3
By J. BRADY McCOLLOUGH
The Kansas City Star

LAWRENCE | Kansas coach Turner Gill’s debut was supposed to be about moving on. Instead, it made KU fans want to live in the past.

North Dakota State 6, Kansas 3.

The Night The Wheat Stood Still.

Gill has vaguely promised fans an exciting brand of football during his first nine months on the job. What they got was a performance lacking in creativity, originality and execution — a stinker deserving of a 0.0.

Somewhere in Naples, Fla., Mark Mangino is feeling something. Validation, perhaps. His teams, no matter how woeful they were at the beginning, never lost to a team from Division I-AA, now called the Football Championship Subdivision. North Dakota State may win a championship this year, but it appears the Jayhawks can forget about that.

The Jayhawks lost to the Bison despite giving up just 168 yards of offense because they turned the ball over three times and could not block North Dakota State. Now, KU will have to look forward to Georgia Tech next week on the same field. It could get ugly — but not any uglier.

Gill wasn’t just brought here to clean up the language in the Anderson Family Football Complex — his mission was to erase the memories of a seven-game losing streak to end the 2009 season and resume the Jayhawks’ march to respectability on a national scale.

After Saturday, the success of the program during 2007-08 — the 12-1 season and Orange Bowl victory followed by the school’s first back-to-back bowl berths and an Insight Bowl win — will feel like a mirage to many. Did that 5-foot-10 Texan named Todd Reesing actually swoop in and save Kansas football from mediocrity?

Gill has begun his career by avoiding real talk about expectations. Asked what he expects, the answer is “to win every game.” Of course, that is not realistic for the Jayhawks, who lost all of their star power after last season and are adjusting to a new coaching staff.

But Gill hasn’t wanted to dip too far into reality since taking this job in December. He has preached building player relationships instead of wins and losses, and in the aftermath of Mangino’s controversial departure, it was a noble idea to have different priorities in place.

Gill’s priority, according to his players, is for them to “enjoy the college football experience.” The assumption is that winning is involved, because what college football program could enjoy losing?

Would Gill’s way work for the Jayhawks? Saturday was the first chance to feel it out, and it couldn’t have gone much worse offensively. Kansas couldn’t run the football all game except for a couple of nifty reverse runs by wide receiver Daymond Patterson. KU totaled just 32 rushing yards from running backs Angus Quigley and Deshaun Sands on 34 carries.

Quarterback Kale Pick, making his first career start, was indecisive and hindered by a conservative game plan that had him throwing mostly short passes. He completed 13 of 22 passes for 138 yards and a costly interception that kept the Jayhawks from at least tying the score late in the third quarter. It was the first time all night Pick had tried to force a pass into coverage, and it cost him. North Dakota State’s Matt Anderson grabbed it and fell into the end zone for a touchback.

There are many Jayhawks who will have regrets Sunday morning. KU kicker Jacob Branstetter missed a 42-yard game-tying field goal wide left in the fourth quarter. Junior tight end Tim Biere fumbled twice, the first leading to the game-winning North Dakota State field goal and the second ending Kansas’ final drive with 3 minutes, 10 seconds left.

After that, the Jayhawks’ defense held once again, but they couldn’t stop the clock because KU had used all of its timeouts by the eight-minute mark.

The Jayhawks had numerous opportunities to take control of the game but didn’t have the offensive line play or the direction from the quarterback to do it. Backup quarterback Jordan Webb entered the game to big applause with 11:27 left and showed promise, but the redshirt freshman didn’t get much help in his first college appearance.

This one will hurt, making KU fans wonder about their identity once again. Hey, at least “Late Night at the Phog” is Oct. 15.

Taken in the third round of the 2009 draft as the most productive pass-catching tight end in NCAA history, Chase Coffman won't ever play a regular season snap for the Bengals.

The team cut him on Saturday after he struggled with a foot injury, and then blocking as a pro. It's sad to see him dumped, but this can't be a surprise for anyone that watched Hard Knocks last year. Coffman was lucky not to get cut then.

Clark and I

As many of you already know, I have a position at Arrowhead that gets me close to the players and brass. It's cool, but a standing rule is to not talk to the Chiefs players or Chiefs brass unless spoken to. That's alright there is still a lot to observe and you have to realize you have a job to do and part of it is to protect the investments. I'd never dish out any bad things or injury news about anyone, that's not kosher, but there are some cool things I did observe that I can relate.

* As much as I hate it, Brodie is a pretty good guy and seems to be really well liked by his team mates.

* Leonard Pope is the loudest player on the Chiefs when getting ready to take the field.

* Mike Vrabel is a really out going and good guy.

* The players genuinely wanted to win that game, you could see it in them and hear it in their voices when they came in at halftime, even amongst the starters that would never see the field in the second half.

* Romeo Crennel coaches his defense constantly, at half and after the game.

But the coolest thing happened well after the game was over and all the players and staff were gone. I ran into Clark Hunt in a hallway, by himself, no body guards, as he was going to an elevator. I knew not to say to much and since it was just he and I, I said hello to him, as is allowed, I then added 'good game tonight'. I assumed he would just say 'yes it was' and then go on down the hall. Instead he paused and said with a smile 'any win is a good win'. I then said to him 'it's good to get one win in the preseason at least'. He then replied to me 'yes and you could tell, even when the starters were still in there, we really out played the Packers the entire game.' I then admitted to him that from my position, I couldn't see any of the game, but that I recorded it and will watch it later. I assumed that was the end of it because the elevator had opened, instead he holds the door from closing, steps back towards me and starts by saying 'well, when you watch the game you will see how well our guys played throughout the game...' he went on about what I will see in the game, but I was so nervous that I don't remember much. I was still worried because I did not want to be in trouble for talking to the Chiefs owner. He then stepped back into the elevator and I said 'thanks and have a good night sir' and he replied 'you too'.

All I got out of it was that he came across as a really good guy that is entirely invested in the play of this team. I think that maybe when he has his body guards with him many are too intimidated to talk to him, but to me he came across as an average fan that lives and dies with the performance of his team.

I felt much better about this team after seeing the inner workings last night. Physically I'm hurting though. You try standing from 2pm to midnight without sitting. I'll be sore for awhile.

Would be worth a look. Housh is 32 but he was still productive for Seatlle last year. It is not like we are stocked with talent at the wr position.

HG's Movie Review

Time to talk about this movie. If you dont wanna know anything about it then stop reading now.

Okay. What we have here is a man (Danny Trejo) that in real life is a bad ass. A tough kid that grew up to be the prison boxing champ and was given a break. We have seen him 100's of times and you really dont know his name. But he is that BAD ASS mexican dude with alot of Ink on his body. And he is one ugly M***er F***er. The man finally has a leading role and takes full advantage of it. He is set up to be the fall guy and he is not too happy about it. Its like they crossed The Expendables and Piranna 3D into one movie. Full of action and blood and some really campy moments. It actually our Grindhouse's Grindouse. lol. This is the movie they should have made instead.

Very 70's with a modern twist. And the absolutly hottest woman on the planet, Michelle Rodriguez goes beyond anything she has ever done. Her part alone allows me to forgive them for having Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Alba in this film. Neither of which can act. Alba should stick to calenders and Lohan should just go away. However. Jesssica Alba naked in the shower does have its perks. Machete gets nail her (what a lucky ugly man). COme to think of it. Linsay Lohan and her mom (in the movie) are both naked in the pool anf Machete gets the two of them at the same time (what a really lucky ugly man). And then there is Michelle Rodriguez and the SOB gets to bump his ugly with her too. (Pity she didnt get naked) but what a really really lucky man.

Cheech Marin, who plays Machete's brother is now a priest and has one of the best lines in the movie, I reslove you of all your sins now get the f**k out of here." LOL.
Robert De Niro is awesome as a racsist political asshole and you can tell he is having fun in the movie. He really gets to cut loose. Also Steven Seagal is our favorit drug dealer that is in control of everything and has a really vicious side. And he finally lost the ponytail.

The movie deals with some strong political opinions and will offend some. But most should accept the movie for what it is. A kickass good time

OK, I just cruised into town to pick up a couple things and got a $300 ticket ($260 +$40 "court costs"). Made a left at a stoplight, pulled into the left lane of a 4 lane highway (signal on) and then pulled into the right lane (signal on) to let the idiots behind pass me. Only problem was I did it within 200' of a cop that had a speeder pulled over. Next thing you know, I'm geting pulled over for "failure to yeild to an emergency vehicle". WTF is that?? Then the little cop had is gun out when he approcahed the car. Crap, I may be dark, but that's kinda out of line.... I'm a supporter of law enforcement, but gimme a break. I would have given him a little flak but I had just gotten out of the lawn mowing gig and had a beer before I left home so I didn't want a DWI added to the charge.
Snap Judgments: Running down preseason Week 3 winners, losers

Snap Judgments: Running down preseason Week 3 winners, losers

"• WINNER -- Kansas City remains winless this preseason, but you can see the makings of a fairly dominant Chiefs running game coming together week by week, and that might portend a return to relevancy in the AFC West. K.C.'s Matt Cassel-led passing attack is still a work in progress, but the Chiefs are averaging an impressive 150 yards per game on the ground this month (No. 2 in the league behind the Steelers) and no one in the NFL has more than their 30 first downs via rushing.

And this isn't an all-on-Larry Johnson's-shoulders type of ground game. Jamaal Charles, Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster all can move the chains in different ways, and the team's leading rusher this preseason is third-year power back Jackie Battle, a 238-pounder who knows how to lower his head but who has also ripped off a pair of 21-yard gallops. Kansas City ran the ball 36 times for 168 yards against Philadelphia on Friday night, throwing only 28 passes for 128 yards.

For now, it sounds like the offensive emphasis in Kansas City is clear. The Chiefs are committed to the ground, and starting to develop an identity."

*********Cardinals have started shopping Matt Leinart++++++

Cardinals have started shopping Matt Leinart

Matt Leinart's time in Arizona appears to be almost up.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Cardinals have started actively shopping Leinart, according to several of his sources. The news comes one day after Leinart went nuclear with comments to the press. If Leinart's quotes were intended to get him moved from the roster, he should consider it mission accomplished.

Florio pointed out Tuesday morning that a straight release is more likely than a trade because Leinart's contract is not conducive to a deal. At best, the Cardinals could find a team willing to give up a late-round conditional pick. It would be tricky because Leinart would likely need to be willing to renegotiate his contract, which balloons to unmanageable levels in 2011.

Derek Anderson will start Thursday's preseason finale, and we doubt Leinart will play at all following this news. Why waste snaps "showcasing" Leinart when Ken Whisenhunt can use them to develop rookie quarterbacks Max Hall and John Skelton?

It's amazing to think how quickly this situation has escalated. There wasn't a hint that Anderson could pass Leinart until eight days ago, and nothing concrete until five days ago.

It would be a surprise if Leinart is still on the roster by Saturday evening.
The Chiefs released WR Lance Long on Tuesday morning to bring the club’s roster total down to 75 active players. Today is the first of two cut-down days this week for each of the NFL’s 32 teams. The NFL mandates that each club trim its roster again on Saturday to get down to 53 players.

Long played in seven games (one start) with Kansas City in 2009, catching 20 passes for 178 yards. The Macomb, Michigan native saw action in 26 games (seven starts) at Mississippi State, recording 46 receptions for 321 yards with one TD. He prepped at Utica Eisenhower High School in Shelbyville, Michigan.

Long was originally signed to the Chiefs practice squad on September 16, 2009 and was promoted to the club’s 53-man roster on October 24, 2009. He had previously played in Arizona under Chiefs head coach Todd Haley.

THE ELITE

1. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts

Analysis: At 34, Manning doesn't show any signs of slowing. He sets the agenda for modern NFL quarterbacks with the no-huddle and three-receiver offenses and generates 12-win seasons as easily as he completes passes. Under Manning, the Colts have won 12 or more games for seven consecutive seasons.
Arrow is pointing: Up

2. Tom Brady, New England Patriots

Analysis: I resisted the urge to put Drew Brees ahead of him, but Brady, with three Super Bowl rings, is still the master. The knee injury slowed him a little in 2009 (4,398 yards, 28 TD passes), but I expect his numbers to be much better this season.
Arrow is pointing: Flat

3. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints

Analysis: The combination of Brees and Sean Payton is scary. Brees is a master at finding the open receiver, and Payton is one of the best playcallers in the business.
Arrow is pointing: Up

4. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers

Analysis: With two Super Bowl rings, Roethlisberger ranks with the elite of the elite quarterbacks in the league. His suspension is a wakeup call, but as a quarterback, he's almost impossible to stop when he rolls out of the pocket and when the game is on the line in the fourth quarter.
Arrow is pointing: Flat

5. Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings

Analysis: It's amazing to think Favre had his best season at age 40. Even though he says this is his final year, Favre loves the game and can still play it at a high level.
Arrow is pointing: Slightly down

6. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

Analysis: This could be the season Rodgers passes Favre as the best quarterback in the NFC North. His arm is strong and he finally learned how to win games in the fourth quarter. Rodgers has had a scintillating preseason. (By the way, NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert and ESPN national columnist Gene Wojciechowski debate the merits of Rodgers and Favre here.)
Arrow is pointing: Up

7. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers

Analysis: He's the biggest reason the Chargers stay ahead of the other AFC West teams. A great leader, Rivers is fearless throwing to tight end Antonio Gates and other pass-catchers even when they appear to be covered.
Arrow is pointing: Up

8. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys

Analysis: Now that Romo has won a playoff game, watch out. The only thing that could prevent him and the Cowboys from playing host to a Super Bowl an aging offensive line faltering.
Arrow is pointing: Up

9. Donovan McNabb, Washington Redskins

Analysis: Mike Shanahan offers McNabb play-action options he didn't have with the Eagles' pass-heavy offense. With McNabb at the helm, the Redskins could be one of the surprise teams in the NFC.
Arrow is pointing: Spinning as he adjusts to a new offense

10. Carson Palmer, Cincinnati Bengals

Analysis: The additions of Terrell Owens, Jermaine Gresham and Jordan Shipley could allow Palmer to relive his 4,000-yard days. Marvin Lewis prefers running the ball, but Palmer would love for the Bengals' offense to open up.
Arrow is pointing: Up

11. Eli Manning, New York Giants

Analysis: Despite recording his first 4,000-yard passing season in 2009 and already owning a Super Bowl ring, Manning doesn't get the respect he is due. He lacks the fiery leadership of his brother, but he continues to improve each season.
Arrow is pointing: Flat

12. Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens

Analysis: With the Ravens' problems in their secondary, Flacco may be asked to throw more, which is fine by him. Anquan Boldin will help him working from the slot and Donte' Stallworth could help to stretch the field on occasion when he returns from injury.
Arrow is pointing: Up

13. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons

Analysis: Like Flacco, Ryan should have a breakthrough season. Most top quarterbacks come into their own in their third season, and Ryan has studied every top quarterback trying to improve his game.
Arrow is pointing: Up

14. Matt Schaub, Houston Texans

Analysis: Schaub finally moved into the elite group by staying healthy and throwing for a league-high 4,770 yards in 2009. (By the way, that was 270 yards more than Peyton Manning had last season.) The next step for Schaub and the Texans? Win in the AFC South and make the playoffs for the first time.
Arrow is pointing: Up

CHAD PENNINGTON DIVISION

15. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears

Analysis: Cutler was an elite quarterback in 2008 when he played for the Broncos, but 26 interceptions for Chicago in 2009 moved him out of my top group. With Mike Martz calling the plays, Cutler should regain his 4,000-yard form and re-emerge as the elite quarterback the Bears thought they acquired in a trade with Denver.
Chance of being elite: 95 percent

16. Kyle "Pro Bowl" Orton, Denver Broncos

Analysis: There is a huge drop-off after Cutler, but Orton is finally getting his due. Despite using a first-round choice on Tim Tebow, Denver realized Orton's importance by giving him a one-year contract extension last month. People seem to forget Orton threw for 3,802 yards last season.
Chance of being elite: 10 percent

17. Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks

Analysis:A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Hasselbeck lost his elite status because of two seasons getting rocked behind bad offensive lines. Hasselbeck is the one hope Pete Carroll has for challenging for the NFC West title.
Chance of being elite: 25 percent

18. Vince Young, Tennessee Titans

Analysis: He's a 66 percent winner as a starter even though he struggles to complete 60 percent of his passes. Young isn't a great thrower, but he finds ways to win.
Chance of being elite: 10 percent

19. Jason Campbell, Oakland Raiders

Analysis: In Washington, Campbell was the handpicked franchise quarterback of Joe Gibbs, but he was always outperformed by Eli Manning, Tony Romo and Donovan McNabb in the NFC East. His fresh start in Oakland has allowed him to grow as a leader of a younger group of offensive players. He also gives the Raiders a quarterback who can complete better than 60 percent of his passes.
Chance of being elite: 10 percent

20. David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars

Analysis: This might be his final season as the Jags' starter, but don't underestimate him. He is a good leader and still has the ability to complete 60 percent of his passes.
Chance of being elite: 5 percent

21. Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers

Analysis: It's hard to believe this is Smith's sixth season. The pressure is on him to get the 49ers to the playoffs. He has not lived up to his No. 1 billing in the draft, obviously, but the surrounding cast is good enough to make a playoff run. One of the faults I noticed when I saw him in the preseason is that he doesn't always hit receivers in stride.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent

22. Matt Cassel, Kansas City Chiefs

Analysis: Cassel showed in New England that he can be a playoff-caliber quarterback if he's surrounded with pass-catchers with yards-after-the-catch ability. He lacks the downfield arm to stretch a defense, but if the Chiefs get him more playmakers, Cassel could thrive.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent

23. Mark Sanchez, New York Jets

Analysis: The additions of Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes at wide receiver and LaDainian Tomlinson catching passes out of the backfield should allow Sanchez to be a 60 percent thrower. Another ally will be the motion packages offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer can install now that Sanchez has a year of experience in the offense.
Chance of being elite: 50 percent

24. Kevin Kolb, Philadelphia Eagles

Analysis: Kolb is the perfect quarterback for Andy Reid's West Coast offense, which is why the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins. Kolb is a rhythm passer out of three- and five-step drops, and he should have a big statistical year.
Chance of being elite: 50 percent

25. Chad Henne, Miami Dolphins

Analysis: Henne has a strong arm and a flair for fourth-quarter comebacks, giving him a chance to be a top-level quarterback. It did seem as though defenses figured him out in the second half of the season, but Henne is smart enough to adjust. Plus, he now has Brandon Marshall as his main target.
Chance of being elite: 45 percent

26. Byron Leftwich, Pittsburgh Steelers

Analysis: Leftwich lacks mobility and tends to stay in the pocket too long, but his strong arm and good leadership could bail out the Steelers filling in for Roethlisberger in September. If Leftwich can't generate a 2-2 start, though, he might fall into a permanent backup role. Leftwich should withstand a challenge from Dennis Dixon, who flubbed his chance to claim the job with a poor preseason performance against Denver.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent

27. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions

Analysis: Stafford survived a painful rookie season in which he was pounded by defenses (24 sacks, 20 interceptions), but he showed flashes of greatness. Tight end Tony Scheffler and wide receiver Nate Burleson will pull coverage away from go-to receiver Calvin Johnson and give the Lions' offense -- and Stafford -- a chance.
Chance of being elite: 55 percent

28. Matt Leinart/Derek Anderson, Arizona Cardinals

Analysis: For Anderson, this is a chance to rebuild his career after tough seasons in Cleveland in 2008 and 2009. He's not very accurate, never completing more than 60 percent of his passes in a season in the NFL. For Leinart, this is the end of the line as a Cardinal after this season if he doesn't regain a starting job he had no business losing.
Chances of being elite: 0 percent

29. Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Analysis: Freeman is a big, athletic quarterback who is being paired with a promising, young receiving corps. The small fracture on the tip of his right thumb is a slight setback, but Freeman is the perfect quarterback for the Bucs to build around.
Chance of being elite: 35 percent

30. Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams

Analysis: What amazes Rams management about Bradford is his accuracy and how calm he seems in the pocket. Unfortunately, his rookie season will be tough because St. Louis lacks big-play receivers and the offensive line is struggling.
Chance of being elite: 85 percent

31. Trent Edwards, Buffalo Bills

Analysis: Call it deja Bills. When Edwards entered the league in 2007, the Bills were a bottled-up offense desperately looking for receivers who could pull coverage away from Lee Evans. Edwards' lone target remains Evans, but the offensive line is now much worse.
Chance of being elite: 0 percent

32. Matt Moore, Carolina Panthers

Analysis: He has a 6-2 record as starter, but a slow start could speed the Jimmy Clausen era in Carolina.
Chance of being elite: 5 percent

33. Jake Delhomme, Cleveland Browns

Analysis: Interceptions in the playoff loss to Arizona in 2008 led to a downward spiral for a quarterback who won a lot of games for John Fox and the Panthers. At 35, Delhomme has no chance of being a starter anywhere else if he doesn't cut it in Cleveland.
