Green Arrow TV Show?

Actor Stephen Amell (Hung, The Vampire Diaries) is going to be playing Green Arrow in The CW’s upcoming TV pilot based on the DC Comics superhero.

There’s been a certain amount of buzz concerning the upcoming Green Arrow TV show. On the one hand, some Smallville fans are upset that The CW isn’t spinning-off the Green Arrow character portrayed by actor Justin Hartley on the now-finished Superman origin show. On the other hand, those who never really got into Smallville are happy that the character is getting a fresh start.
Of course, one big issue facing the series is the choice of the lead actor who will play Green Arrow and his alter-ego Olvier Queen, a playboy industrialist who becomes a radical politician /costumed vigilante armed with technologically-enhanced arrows.

Deadline reports that The CW is tapping Stephen Amell to take the leading role in Green Arrow. The actor has a long resume of TV guest spots, punctuated by recent extended gigs on The Vampire Diaries, 90210, and HBO’s now-canceled sex comedy, Hung. With his Abercrombie looks and muted demeanor, Amell isn’t the immediate name that comes to mind when thinking of a fitting Oliver Queen – and truth be told, this news has that familiar sense of unease that came with the news that Adrieanne Palicki (GI Joe 2) was playing Wonder Woman in NBC’s stalled pilot for that DC comic character.
In the comics, Queen is a kind of rougish Robin Hood type and outspoken leftist; if anything, this TV pilot sounds more in line with the recent DC Comics “New 52″ Reboot of the character, in which Queen is much more of a Robert Downey Jr. Tony Stark type. It wouldn’t be surprising if the showrunners went that route, since the New 52 Reboot was partly an attempt by the DC Comics and Warner Bros. to make their superheroes more fitting for multimedia implementation – meaning, better fits for TV shows and movies (see also: The upcoming Superman reboot movie).
We’ll find out if DC’s multimedia overhaul was effective when Green Arrow enters into this Fall’s TV pilot battle royal, fighting for a spot on the fall schedule.

Chiefs Hire Special Teams Coach

We have some actual Kansas City Chiefs coaching news.

Just not the offensive coordinator (yet).

The Chiefs announced they've hired Tom McMahon to coach special teams. McMahon comes from the St. Louis Rams where he was the special teams coordinator the last three seasons. Here's an interview from last November with the Chiefs new special teams coach.
Prior to the Chiefs, McMahon was in St. Louis and before that two years with the Atlanta Falcons. He was also on the Louisville staff as well as Utah State.

McMahon's hire also means Steve Hoffman, the previous special teams coach, is out. The Chiefs announced he has not been retained.
And in more Chiefs coaching news, two more coaches are not coming back: receivers coach Richie Anderson and assistant offensive line coach Pat Perles were not retained. It had been previously rumored that they were on their way out.

With all of this back and forth the last few days between Irsay and Manning it appears more and more that Peyton won't be back in Indy next year. Is Pioli bold enough to go after Manning? Would Manning in KC be worth it? I have a feeling that even if we did go after Manning we'd never know about it. Don't want to hurt Matty's feelings. IMO, we shouldn't care if Matt knows we are looking around. He needs to know how crappy he is. I think they all kind of protect him on what his true effectiveness is.

Chiefs refuse to pay Haley the balance of his salary

By Mike Florio Jan 26, 2012, 7:42 PM CST
Report: Chiefs refuse to pay Haley the balance of his salary

Earlier this month, former Chiefs coach Todd Haley made waves by indicating a belief that the Chiefs bugged portions of the team facility and tampered with his cell phone. Haley’s next accusation could be a bit more tangible.

Mike Jurecki of XTRA Sports 910 in Phoenix says via Twitter that he’s “[h]earing the Chiefs R refusing 2 play Todd Haley the remainder of his salary, was terminated 4 cause, another words 4 a specific reason.”

In something closer to English, this means that the Chiefs refuse to pay Haley because he was fired “for cause,” which means that the team believes there was some sort of wrongdoing or breach of his contract, which ran through 2012.

It’s not unprecedented, but it’s rare. The Raiders fired former head coach Lane Kiffin for cause, and the team eventually prevailed on the grievance filed by Kiffin with the league office.

That’s the procedure to which coaches agree when becoming coaches, sacrificing their right to sue in court and allowing any claims to be resolved by the league office, a forum that tends to be far more favorable to the 32 franchises who employ the Commissioner.

Given that Haley has worked for the Cardinals, and could soon be working for the Cardinals again, it’s hardly a stretch to ponder whether Haley is telling people like Jurecki that Haley has been stiffed. As with the allegations of bugs and cell-phone shenanigans, Haley should just make the claim, if he has a claim to make.

Quote

Police charged a South Side man with animal cruelty after officers say they watched him take a running start and kick his kitten 15 feet before raising his arms to signal a field goal.
The officers immediately arrested a laughing Percy Love, 22, after he allegedly kicked the small black cat Monday afternoon in the 6200 block of South Campbell, police said.
He told officers: “This is my cat, Nightmare. He is tough, we play like that all the time. It’s just a cat,” police said.
Officers cared for the cat until Animal Care and Control workers took custody. Animal Care and Control Director Cherie Travis said on her Facebook page that, “Despite the terrible abuse, the cat . . . is doing quite well. He’s in medical today getting an exam and X-rays. He is a very friendly and affectionate cat.”
Love, of the 6500 block of South Maplewood, was ordered held on $50,000 bond and his next hearing is Feb. 1.

NFL Jersey Change in 3 Months

Didn't really know a great place to put this, but if you buy NFL jerseys often - you may want to wait for now:

Quote

If you love the NFL enough to plunk down some jack for a jersey, replica or official, you probably should wait three months.

In April 2012, Nike takes over the apparel contract from Reebok. And on the day that the switch was announced in October 2010, Nike Brand president Charlie Denson told Darren Rovell of CNBC that significant adjustments are coming. “We plan on changing the NFL jersey dramatically just like we’ve done with the college programs, using new thinking and the greatest technology available,” Denson said. “The NFL program hasn’t had the same type of advancement in recent years.

The looming change possibly explains why players like Vikings running backAdrian Peterson are contemplating a number change. Recently on his Twitter page, Peterson mused about shifting to No. 21 or No. 23. (Maybe Peterson knows something that cornerback Asher Allen, who currently wears No. 21, doesn’t.) In past years, a player-initiated number change would have been met with a requirement that the player refund Reebok for the existing inventory of jerseys with the number he wants to abandon. With the new Nike jerseys coming soon, there’s a chance that it will be open season for the shifting of numbers.

Regardless of whether we’ll see players changing numbers, the jerseys apparently will be changing. And it would make sense to refrain from breaking out your change purse until the new designs are unveiled.

Flacco thinks he has earned a second contract

Flacco thinks he has earned a second contract

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has just completed the fourth year of a five-year rookie contract. He thinks he’s done enough to merit additional security.

“Definitely,” Flacco said Monday, via the team’s official website. “We’ll see how it goes; if it goes, it goes, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

So far, it hasn’t been going anywhere. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, there have been no talks toward a new contract.

Why does Flacco think he has earned an extension? “I think I’m the quarterback that I am,” Flacco said. “I think the first four years that I’ve played here we’ve gone to the playoffs every time [and] won a game. I think the last two years that I’ve played in the playoffs, I’ve played well in the playoffs.”

I think. I get. The point.

But he wasn’t done. “And like I said earlier, I think when you watch the film and you’re a guy in this organization, I think that you can say, ‘Hey, he’s played pretty damn good for us,’” Flacco added. “But like I said, you never know what’s going to happen.

Though owner Steve Bisciotti said last year that he envisioned negotiations beginning in 2012, there’s a chance that, once the two sides start talking, they’ll realize that there’s a significant disconnect between what the Ravens want to pay and what Flacco wants to be paid. On one hand, Flacco’s camp surely will point to performances like the one he put together on Sunday in the AFC title game. On the other hand, the team surely will point to his consistent pattern of inconsistency.

In the end, both sides would be wise to work something out. While the Ravens could do a lot better at the position, they could do — and have done — a lot worse in the past.

Chiefs OC search

Could it be Cameron, considering his ties to Zorn?

By Mike Florio Jan 22, 2012, 12:10 PM CST
Cam Cameron not expected back in Baltimore

Come 2012, the elder statesmen of offensive coordinators in the AFC North could be Jay Gruden of the Bengals.

The Browns don’t have one, though they reportedly plan to hire a coordinator in order to reduce the workload on coach Pat Shurmur. The Steelers have fired/retired/not rehired Bruce Arians. And, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron could be on his way out of Baltimore.

Per Mort, Cameron’s contract is expiring after the season, with no new offer on the table. It’s well known that tension exists between Cameron and quarterback Joe Flacco, who bristled publicly last year when quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn was fired.

An obvious candidate to replace Cameron would be former Vikings coach Brad Childress, given that Childress and Ravens coach John Harbaugh spent several years together as colleagues with the Eagles. Then again, there’s a chance that Harbaugh knows from his experience with Chilly in Philly that it would be a programmatic non-fit.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m. ET: An even more obvious candidate would be former Raiders coach Hue Jackson, who served as Flacco’s position coach in 2008 and 2009, before joining Oakland as offensive coordinator.

JoPa passes away

Quote

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Joe Paterno, the longtime Penn State coach who won more games than anyone in major college football but was fired amid a child sex abuse scandal that scarred his reputation for winning with integrity, died Sunday. He was 85.

His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death: "His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled."

"He died as he lived," the statement said. "He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community."

Paterno built his program on the credo "Success with Honor," and he found both. The man known as "JoePa" won 409 games and took the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games and two national championships. More than 250 of the players he coached went on to the NFL.

"He will go down as the greatest football coach in the history of the game," Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said after his former team, the Florida Gators, beat Penn State 37-24 in the 2011 Outback Bowl.

Paterno's son Scott said on Nov. 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer. The cancer was diagnosed during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness. A few weeks after that revelation, Paterno also broke his pelvis after a fall but did not need surgery.

Paterno had been in the hospital since Jan. 13 for observation for what his family had called minor complications from his cancer treatments. Not long before that, he conducted his only interview since losing his job, with The Washington Post. Paterno was described as frail then, speaking mostly in a whisper and wearing a wig. The second half of the two-day interview was conducted at his bedside.

"As the last 61 years have shown, Joe made an incredible impact," said the statement from the family. "That impact has been felt and appreciated by our family in the form of thousands of letters and well wishes along with countless acts of kindness from people whose lives he touched. It is evident also in the thousands of successful student athletes who have gone on to multiply that impact as they spread out across the country."

The final days of Paterno's Penn State career were easily the toughest in his 61 years with the university and 46 seasons as head football coach.

It was because Paterno was a such a sainted figure -- more memorable than any of his players and one of the best-known coaches in all of sports -- that his downfall was so startling. During one breathtaking week in early November, Paterno was engulfed by a scandal and forced from his job, because he failed to go to the police in 2002 when told a young boy was molested inside the football complex.

"I didn't know which way to go ... and rather than get in there and make a mistake," he said in the Post interview.

Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator expected to succeed Paterno before retiring in 1999, was charged with sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years. Two university officials stepped down after they were charged with perjury following a grand jury investigation of Sandusky. But attention quickly focused on an alleged rape that took place in a shower in the football building, witnessed by Mike McQueary, a graduate assistant at the time.

McQueary testified that he had seen Sandusky attacking the child and that he had told Paterno, who waited a day before alerting school authorities. Police were never called and the state's top cop later said Paterno failed to execute his moral responsibility by not contacting police.

"You know, (McQueary) didn't want to get specific," Paterno said in the Post interview. "And to be frank with you I don't know that it would have done any good, because I never heard of, of, rape and a man. So I just did what I thought was best. I talked to people that I thought would be, if there was a problem, that would be following up on it."

On the morning of Nov. 9, Paterno said he would retire following the 2011 season. He also said he was "absolutely devastated" by the abuse case.

"This is a tragedy," the coach said. "It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

But the university trustees faced a crisis, and in an emergency meeting that night, they fired Paterno, effective immediately. Graham Spanier, one of the longest-serving university presidents in the nation, also was dismissed.

According to Lanny Davis, an attorney retained by the trustees as an adviser, board vice chairman John Surma regretted having to tell Paterno the decision over the phone.

The university handed the football team to one of Paterno's assistants, Tom Bradley, who said Paterno "will go down in history as one of the greatest men, who maybe most of you know as a great football coach."

Thick, smoky-lens glasses, rolled up khakis, jet-black sneakers, blue windbreaker -- Paterno was easy to spot on the sidelines. His teams were just as easy to spot on the field; their white helmets and classic blue and white uniforms had the same old-school look as the coach.

Paterno believed success was not measured entirely on the field. From his idealistic early days, he had implemented what he called a "grand experiment" -- to graduate more players while maintaining success on the field.

He was a frequent speaker on ethics in sports, a conscience for a world often infiltrated by scandal and shady characters.

His teams consistently ranked among the best in the Big Ten for graduating players. As of 2011, it had 49 academic All-Americans, the third-highest among schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision. All but two played under Paterno.

"He teaches us about really just growing up and being a man," former linebacker Paul Posluszny, now with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, once said. "Besides the football, he's preparing us to be good men in life."

Paterno certainly had detractors, as well. One former Penn State professor called his high-minded words on academics a farce. He was criticized for making broad critiques about the wrongs in college football without providing specifics. A former administrator said his players often got special treatment compared to non-athletes. His coaching style often was considered too conservative. Some thought he held on to his job too long. There was a push to move him out in 2004 but it failed.

But the critics were in the minority, and his program was never cited for major NCAA violations. However, the child sexual abuse scandal prompted separate investigations by the U.S. Department of Education and the NCAA into the school's handling.

Paterno played quarterback and cornerback for Brown University and set a defensive record with 14 career interceptions, a distinction he boasted about to his teams all the way into his 80s. He graduated in 1950 with plans to go to law school. He said his father hoped he would someday be president.

When he was 23, a former coach at Brown was moving to Penn State to become the head coach and persuaded Paterno to come with him as an assistant.

"I had no intention to coach when I got out of Brown," Paterno said in 2007 at Beaver Stadium in an interview before being inducted into the Hall of Fame. "Come to this hick town? From Brooklyn?"

In 1963, he was offered a job by the late Al Davis -- $18,000, triple his salary at Penn State, plus a car to become general manager and coach of the AFL's Oakland Raiders. He said no. Rip Engle retired as Penn State head coach three years later, and Paterno took over.

At the time, the Lions were considered "Eastern football" -- inferior -- and Paterno courted newspaper coverage to raise the team's profile. In 1967, PSU began a 30-0-1 streak.

But Penn State couldn't get to the top of the polls. The Lions finished second in 1968 and 1969 despite perfect records. They went 12-0 in 1973 and finished fifth. Texas edged them in 1969 after President Richard Nixon, impressed with the Longhorns' bowl performance, declared them No. 1.

"I'd like to know," Paterno said later, "how could the president know so little about Watergate in 1973, and so much about college football in 1969?"

A national title finally came in 1982, in a 27-23 win over Georgia at the Sugar Bowl. Penn State won another in 1986 after the Lions picked off Vinny Testaverde five times and beat Miami 14-10 in the Fiesta Bowl.

They have made several title runs since then, including a 2005 run to the Orange Bowl and an 11-1 campaign in 2008 that earned them a berth in the Rose Bowl, where they lost 37-23 to Southern California.

In his later years, physical ailments wore the old coach down. Paterno was run over on the sideline during a game at Wisconsin in November 2006 and underwent knee surgery. He hurt his hip in 2008 demonstrating an onside kick.

An intestinal illness and a bad reaction to antibiotics prescribed for dental work slowed him for most of the 2010 season. Paterno began scaling back his speaking engagements that year, ending his summer caravan of speeches to alumni across the state.

Then a receiver bowled over Paterno at practice in August, sending him to the hospital with shoulder and pelvis injuries and consigning him to coach much of the season from the press box.

"The fact that we've won a lot of games is that the good Lord kept me healthy, not because I'm better than anybody else," Paterno said two days before he won his 409th game and passed Eddie Robinson of Grambling State for the most in Division I. "It's because I've been around a lot longer than anybody else."

Paterno could be conservative on the field, especially in big games, relying on the tried-and-true formula of defense, the running game and field position.

"They've been playing great defense for 45 years," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said in November.

Paterno and his wife, Sue, raised five children in State College. Anybody could telephone him at his modest ranch home -- the same one he appeared in front of on the night he was fired -- by looking up "Paterno, Joseph V." in the phone book.

He walked to home games and was greeted and wished good luck by fans on the street. Former players paraded through his living room for the chance to say hello. But for the most part, he stayed out of the spotlight.

Paterno did have a knack for joke. He referred to Twitter, the social media, as "Twittle-do, Twittle-dee."

He also could be abrasive and stubborn, and had his share of run-ins with his bosses or administrators. And as his legend grew, so did the attention to his on-field decisions, and the questions about when he would retire.

Calls for his retirement reached a crescendo in 2004. The next year, Penn State went 11-1 and won the Big Ten. In the Orange Bowl, PSU beat Florida State, whose coach, Bobby Bowden, left the Seminoles after the 2009 season after 34 years and 389 wins.

Like many others, he was outlasted by "JoePa."

Depth Chart Analysis/Rating

Kcchiefs.com has started their review of positions and players. Further, the draft is the next thing we arguably have to look forward to during a long offseason that hasn't even started yet. For something to do, I thought it would be interesting to have folks rate our current lineup. This should indicate potential draft and FA targets.

Copy/paste the depth chart (or whichever players you feel like rating) and annotate using a rating system of 1 to 7 (see below). Assume injured players will return to full capacity and current free agents will be retained (dangerous assumptions, I know). Feel free to add in role players if you would like (McCluster, etc...). Add in justification where you see fit.

For simplicity, think of the rating system like this:

1 = Terrible, liability of the field, high-priority for replacement
2
3
4 = Middle-of-the-road, average. Approximately half the starters in the league at this position are worse, half are better.
5
6
7= Exceptional, strength on the field, few (if any) players in the league are playing better.

Things I Hate In Football

I hate: whiny receivers who immediately jump up "throwing a flag" for interference;
defensive backs who celebrate an incompletion--and the next play giving up a long play or a touchdown;
a defensive lineman celebrating a tackle--and the next play the runner blows by him for a 5 yard gain for poetic justice;
players who hit instead of tackling--allowing the runner more yardage due to horrible fundamentals;
punting from anywhere on the opponent's side of the 50;

Just a few examples of actions that the football gods will reward in their own very noticeable way

2012 NFL News and Rumors Thread

It has been really hard to know where to post stuff since there are so many competing threads with more or less the same topic. I figured I would start this thread for all the unsubstantiated nonsense and speculation (my favorite part). We do this on the Knicks site and it becomes a really great resource for all the latest rumblings before they become official. I'll start it off...
This would be great. If the Skins move for Manning. and then someone like Cleveland picks up Matt Flynn in free agency (seems they won't be franchising him) that would clear a lot of the way to move for Griffin. Not sure we have the sack to do so, but I like the way the deck is stacking up. If he is there on a silver platter and we balk, I'll be really t'd off.

Chiefs anticipate being special on defense next season
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

Between changing their head coach and then their quarterback late in the year, the Chiefs experienced so much drama that this little fact slipped through almost unnoticed: By season’s end, the Chiefs had one of the NFL’s best defensive teams.

Opponents over the last six games struggled to move the ball and score points against the Chiefs.

It wasn’t lost on Romeo Crennel. He said recently that things worked so well at the end of the season that he would in effect continue to serve as the defensive coordinator even though he’s now the head coach.

Crennel also indicated he intends to retain the rest of the defensive coaching staff.

This could just be the beginning of the good news for a defense that next season will welcome back one of its best players, safety Eric Berry. He missed all but the first few plays of last season because of a knee injury.

The Chiefs will retain all of their significant defensive players, with the possible exception of cornerback Brandon Carr. He will be an unrestricted free agent if he doesn’t re-sign before the start of the signing period in March.

With all of this news taken as a whole, the Chiefs believe they’re setting themselves up to be something special on defense next season.

“I kind of feel we got what we wanted,” Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson said. “Definitely no complaints. It will all be open arms.

“We’ll make strides to be even better, especially after getting Eric Berry back. I can’t wait for that guy to come back. We’ll be good. We’re a young team and defensively, we’ll be even better. We’ll be really good next year.”

Crennel, 64, is generally considered one of the NFL’s best defensive coaches. He was a defensive coach for five Super Bowl-winning teams and worked wonders when he arrived in Kansas City two years ago, taking over one of the league’s worst defenses from 2009 and making it into a competitive group.

“The thing I’ve noticed about Romeo, and it’s different than some of these young hotshots, is that Romeo doesn’t have a huge ego,” former Chiefs quarterback Rich Gannon said. “If he thinks the thing he needs to do to win a game is to play his base defense the whole game and not blitz a lot, that’s what he’ll do. A lot of coaches out there, they can’t help themselves. It’s almost an ego thing with some other guys that if you’re going to throw it, they’re going to blitz.

“Romeo is about playing winning football and being sound defensively. If you study his defenses over the years, that’s the thing that jumps out at you. They’re fundamentally sound, and they don’t make a lot of mistakes.”

Crennel needed just a few days after being promoted to permanent head coach to decide he would continue to call the defenses. That’s a departure from the way he did things when he was the coach in Cleveland from 2005 through 2008.

He had two different defensive coordinators during that time. Only in Crennel’s first season did the Browns rank in the NFL’s top half in both scoring and total defense.

Perhaps that’s the reason he’s going to call his own defenses with the Chiefs.

“I never understand why these coaches who are so good at what they do that when they finally get a head coaching job, then they hand that responsibility off to someone who isn’t as qualified,” Gannon said. “Why would you do that? So the fact he’s calling the defenses again, that’s a big thing for the Chiefs. That’s really important.”

Despite a miserable start to the season, the Chiefs finished 11th in the league in yards allowed and 12th in scoring defense. Over the final six games, they were third in both total defense and scoring defense.

Crennel took over as the interim head coach replacing the fired Todd Haley with three games left. The Chiefs won two of those games, beating the high-scoring and previously undefeated Packers for one victory and Tim Tebow and the Broncos for the other.

“Look at how they played against Green Bay,” Gannon said. “That was pretty impressive. Nobody else really had any answers for Aaron Rodgers and that Green Bay offense, and yet they were able to get pressure on him, they mixed coverages well, and they won.

“You’d think they’ll be pretty good on defense again next year. They need to add another big guy inside, another big body to stop the run. But I think they’re headed in the right direction.

“He’s a very good defensive coordinator, and I think he’s put together a good staff. They’ve got to get better in the run defense, but they’ve done a nice job of developing talent. Look at Derrick Johnson and how well he’s played, and Tamba Hali. They’ve got playmakers at every level of their defense, and they’ll continue to add on that side of the ball.”

Championship Sunday

I will be honest here. if at the beginning of the season you would have asked me whoI thought the teams would be on Championship Sunday I would have only gotten the Pats correct.

So we have Giants at the Niners and Ravens at the Pats. Not expected but it could be worse. The more I think about it, these could be some good games.
