DOOM and GLOOM for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.
Shocked? The above title couldn’t be coming from the head of Koolaid affairs here at HomeoftheCHIEFS could it? Maybe I just feel like shocking you today, or maybe I just want this newest installment to turn a few heads around here. Allow me to explain,…
The last blog I wrote was on June 19th. I have taken the last month off from writing the blog to take a few deep breaths, and collect myself as we prepare for the upcoming Season. As most if you know, my heart has been broken for the last year, I recently quit smoking and I recently started a company, and quite frankly, It is very hard to be the messenger of optimism when so many of my peers have already cashed in their chips after arguably one of the best off-season’s in Kansas City Chiefs history. I am the 12th man. I am what I am.
Here we are less than two weeks away from camp, and I find myself taking measure of everything that has come to pass at good ole’ #1 Arrowhead Drive over the last few months. King Carl Peterson has left the building, and our new favorite buddy with the broad shoulders has taken the reigns. He locked down the stadium, shoved a sock down the collective media’s throat, and got down to business. I loved it when he drafted Tyson Jackson too. People thought I was nuts. They still do, and I’m ok with that.
Now, here we are. New Head coach, a new franchise quarterback, (yes, for 63 million, and 28 guaranteed he IS our franchise quarterback ) a new staff, new schemes, new practice facilities, A stadium that should be done by next season, a 50 year anniversary to tend too, and yes a few new names on the roster. Oh, and let’s also not forget that we have number 58 being inducted into the hall of fame as well. Sure some have made very strong arguments to other off-season’s of the past as being better, but c’mon? It’s at least top three, and still number one in my book. My argument is simple. Derrick Thomas to the Hall of Fame, 50th anniversary, new Staff, new GM, new players, and new direction.
Ahhh, but the CHIEFS have only won 6 games in the last two seasons. I have said it before, and I will say it again. CHIEFSNATION has been demoralized over the past two years. So DOOM and GLOOM it is! Things just can’t turn around in one year can they? I mean, the Miami Dolphins won 1 game in 2007. They won their division in 2008. Then you have the Falcons, who only won four. I seem to remember seeing them in the playoffs in 2008 as well? Funny thing is, BOTH of these franchises were going through management changes all the way to the top. Just like your CHIEFS have gone through during this long offseason. Oh,and the Falcons will not be SuperBowl contenders this year, you can write that down. Tony made a bad choice. I would say it to his face. He could have stayed. Sorry, back on point.
Sure they are deeper at quarterback right now than they have been in years. Same goes for the secondary. Sure they have many capable bodies at tailback. Of course they are little thin on the right side. Yes, I know they need some help in the return game, and YES now that Tony Gonzalez is gone the world has come to an end. I know. I have started my food storage, and began the purchase of batteries.
The odds are against us. The numbers say Doom and Gloom. The experts say to be patient. The know it all’s say I’m crazy.
I am crazy but I am no expert. I am a fan. The sooner everyone understands this very simple concept, the better. I am a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. I keep one side of my closet for Chiefs apparel, I sleep with three Chiefs blankets, I use only red pens, I drink a shite load of red Koolaid, and I make no excuses about it. Call it pathetic, I call it unique. I love my football team, and I will never call them losers before camp. Not on my watch. Never. You may know the stats. You may prove me wrong on a daily basis, and you may have all the right answers, and you may get paid boat loads of money to report about the Chiefs, but guess What? You’re not unique.
So go ahead, and call your 5 and 6 wins. Go ahead and try to convince me that you know more about football than I do, and go ahead cash your chips in before camp. Go ahead and try and convince me that Mike Vrabel isn’t happy to be a Chief. Go ahead and try and get me to believe that Brian Waters is going to be traded, and that Matt Cassel is going to be sacked more than 50 times in 2009. Go ahead and let yourself believe that players like Bobby Engram, and Zach Thomas are too old to play in the NFL, and that now that Tony is gone, there is no hope. Feel free to blow off signings like Mike Goff, and Mike Brown. Sure Tamba Hali won’t be a better player at his natural weight at outside linebacker. Go ahead and believe that Dwayne Bowe will keep dropping passes. While you’re at it, go ahead and let yourself believe that Larry Johnson won’t have comeback year as well. Let yourself think that Todd Haley might not be a great coach. Go ahead and question Scott Pioli, He didn’t win enough Super Bowls right?
As most of you know, I frequent many Chiefs boards on the internet. I do this for many reasons, but I want to point out that the attitude is the same everywhere. Everyone is scared to stand up and say that they think the CHIEFS can win in 2009. Nobody wants to be ridiculed. Everyone else has a better answer than you right? Allow me…..
THE CHIEFS CAN WIN IN 2009! The AFC WEST IS WIDE OPEN!
See? That’s not so hard now is it? Now be a fan, and get ready for another great season of Kansas City Chiefs football.

You would think; after spending so much money on a “franchise QB”, the one who is supposed to be the face of the franchise, that management would put him higher up than #7 on the official web sites list of “Featured Articles”.
I am pretty sure that the articles there are all sorted by date.
Scott Pioli is the new Sheriff in town. He’s not big on glorifying players. He just scouts them well.
How do I change my avatar Penguin? This new site kicks ass, Im serious bro. I love it.
It is all done via http://en.gravatar.com/ . Make sure you sign up with the same email as here.
Thanks for the help with gravatar. It looks as if I got it fixed, and I love this new comment system you have in place. Very good work, and thanks for all that you do .
3 Cheers for Penguin Everybody.
i have high hopes for the chiefs we have no where to go but up. but the doom and gloom of alot of chiefs fans may what be their demise.
I said it two months ago and I’ll say it again. The Chiefs will win 10 games and the Western division. Call me crazy but that’s what I believe. Denver is in disarray, so still are the Raiders. The only challenge is San Diego ( who won it last year at 8-8) and we always play them tough. We should have beaten them IN San Diego last year if Herm had not gone for two and played for overtime, but what the heck. I always look forward to a new season but I’m very excited about this one. One more time, 5-1 in the division and 5-5 against the rest of the league. GO CHIEFS!!!!
Thanks Barry. I (and my wife) have always considered myself a raving CHIEFS fan, but I have to admit to toting my chips right up to the cashiers window for this season. All I needed was a little encouragement from a true Mouth-Foaming CHIEFS fan to pick me up and get me back to the table again.
GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!
Ahh, The Blog is alive, and well. I thank you all for reading.
I couldn’t agree more Barry. I compare this offseason to a Patriot offseason. Do they constantly make ESPN’S breaking news for signing the high priced free agent. That’s what the fans wanted here to get excited, but that isn’t how you build a team, ask Washington fans how well that works. High priced free agents are generally “I” guys and have more money than they know what to do with, so much less motivated. Another key point that I don’t understand is what people don’t think our very young players will get better? I see the transformation first hand every year, rookies look like deer in the headlights, scared, unsure, thinking way to much. I see first hand the transformation into confident, unafraid, reacting football players by year two and beyond. We know how leaders on the d-side that the youngsters can look at and be told by guys that have finished the deal, that we are going to do this, failure is not an option. We have had no depth the past few years now we have that when the injury bug hits us. Our special teams will also be light years ahead of where we have been, which is the X-Factor no one talks about. The fan base is exactly where it was in 1987/1988 and we know what that became and I predict it will be the same if not even stronger here in the very near future!!
